Spiritual Heart Disease An Indifferent/Apathetic Heart
Church in Laodicea (Rev 3:14-19) Indifferent about the Lord (v.15) Consequence: Spit out of Jesus mouth rejected (v.16) Issue: heart stolen away by materialism and pride (v.17, Matt. 13:22) God s Solution: Buy refined gold & white garments live spiritually rich and pure lives (v.18) Buy eye salve to see look at things from a spiritual perspective (v.18) Receive God s chastening & repent (v.19)
Applying Rev. 3: Post-Exile Jews Extremely zealous about rebuilding temple (Ezra 3:8-11) Discouraged by adversaries and king. Stopped building until second year of Darius (Ezra 4:1-24) Haggai picks up in this second year of Darius (Hag. 1:1-9, 12-15) Issue: Thou sayest, I am rich, and have gotten riches, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art the wretched one (Rev 3:17) Jews had grown indifferent distracted by materialism (Hag. 1:2-4)
Applying Rev. 3: Post-Exile Jews Solution: Receive God s Chastening - As many as I love, I reprove and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent (Rev. 3:19) God uses reproof to change hearts of the Jews (Hag. 1:5-6, 9, Ezek. 36:16- 31) He does this out of love (Heb. 12:6-13) Solution: Live spiritually rich and pure lives - I counsel thee to buy of me gold refined by fire, that thou mayest become rich; and white garments, that thou mayest clothe thyself (Rev. 3:18) Jews must take action and change their ways resume construction of temple (Hag. 1:14). Consistent action can stir up hearts.
Applying Rev. 3: Post-Exile Jews Solution: Look at things from a spiritual perspective - I counsel thee to buy of me eye salve to anoint thine eyes, that thou mayest see (Rev. 3:18) Israelites must focus on God s work, not their own (Hag. 1:2, 4-5, 7-8) Hearts drawn & enlightened by God s word (Hag 1:9, 12-14, Jn 6:44-45, Eph 1:18, 13) Reveals lost state and consequences of sin (Heb 10:26-31) Shows God s love and mercy (Rom. 2:4, Eph. 2:1-10) Explains God s role in blessings of abundance (Deut 8:11-14, 18) Changes outlook on life (1 Pet 2:11-12, 4:12-14)
Rev. 3:20-21 - Behold, I stand at the door and knock: if any man hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to him and will sup with him, and he with me. He that overcometh, I will give to him to sit down with me in my throne, as I also overcame, and sat down with my Father in his throne
