  1. School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) Update to the Board of Trustees September 2021

Our Work Mission Statement: The mission of the Spring ISD SHAC is to ensure that all students have healthy bodies and minds, display good character and are ready to learn, contribute and lead in today s global society. Goal: The goal of SHAC is to assist Spring ISD in ensuring that local community values are reflected in the district s health education and provide recommendations regarding policies and procedures that impact student health through an annual report to the Board of Trustees.

  4. Priorities for 2021-22 To ensure students participate in recess and physical activity during in-person learning Review district s recess policy Create SHAC guide for employees Update district s wellness policy Participate in the health textbook adoption process

  5. Update to SHAC Roles and Responsibilities Based on the 2021 legislative session and specifically HB 1525, there are two new SHAC requirements: 1. Meeting requisites 2. Health textbook adoption guidelines HB 1525

  6. #1 - New SHAC Meeting Requirements THE COUNCIL SHALL: Post notice of the date, hour, place and subject of the meetings on a bulletin board in the central administrative office of each campus in the school district at least 72 hours before each meeting Ensure that the notice required is posted on the district s website Make an audio or video recording of the meeting Submit the minutes and audio or video recording of the meeting to the district no later than the 10th day after the meeting The school district shall post the minutes and audio or video recording on the district s website as soon as practicable

  7. #2 - Health Textbook Adoption Requirements THE COUNCIL SHALL: Hold at least two public meetings on the curriculum materials before adopting recommendations Provide the recommendations to the board at a public meeting of the board The board shall take action on the adoption of the recommendations by a record vote at a public meeting

Implementation Timeline Board work session to receive the health materials recommendations Dec. 2, 2021 Public meeting #2 on the health materials Oct. 4, 2021 First SHAC meeting of school year Sept. 13, 2021 Third SHAC meeting Jan. 24, 2022 March 28, 2022 Fourth SHAC meeting Sept. 2, 2021 Board convenes the SHAC for the purpose of making recommendations regarding the health textbook adoption Sept. 27, 2021 Public meeting #1 on the health materials Oct. 18, 2021 Second SHAC meeting Dec. 7, 2021 Board meeting to adopt health materials recommendations for adoption
