  2. What is Legionella? Naturally occurring, but may grow rapidly Risk of infection comes from exposure to aerosol o Legionnaire s disease is a pneumonia-like illness o 400-500 cases each year o Cannot be transmitted person to person

  3. Legionella growth Where water is stored or re-circulated or is stagnant within system If the system contain nutrients that support Legionella growth When temperatures are 20-45oC

  4. Key risk factors Water systems that have been closed off Dead-ends in water piping

  6. Controlling the risk Ensure water systems are properly designed Flush systems weekly Consider cleaning/disinfecting before reoccupation
