Our Alleluia (sung to the tune of if you re happy and you know it ) Alleluia, alleluia praise the Lord! Alleluia, alleluia praise the Lord! Let us praise him for his glory, As we listen to the story. Alleluia, alleluia praise the Lord!

  5. Let us read todays Gospel. A reading from the holy Gospel: Mark 10:35-45 Glory to you, O Lord. Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to Jesus. Teacher, they said, there is something we want you to do for us. What is it? Jesus asked them. They answered, When you sit on your throne in your glorious Kingdom, we want you to let us sit with you, one at your right and one at your left. Jesus said to them, You don't know what you are asking for. Can you drink the cup of suffering that I must drink? Can you be baptized in the way I must be baptized? We can, they answered. Jesus said to them, You will indeed drink the cup I must drink and be baptized in the way I must be baptized. But I do not have the right to choose who will sit at my right and my left. It is God who will give these places to those for whom he has prepared them. When the other ten disciples heard about it, they became angry with James and John. So Jesus called them all together to him and said, You know that those who are considered rulers of the heathen have power over them, and the leaders have complete authority. This, however, is not the way it is among you. If one of you wants to be great, he must be the servant of the rest; and if one of you wants to be first, he must be the slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served; he came to serve and to give his life to redeem many people. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord, Jesus Christ.

  6. Setting the Scene It is the 29th Sunday in Ordinary time; the colour green will be used in church. What do you remember from today s reading? James and John ask to sit by Jesus side in heaven, but Jesus says he is not able to give them these seats. It is God who will give these places. The other disciples start to get cross with James and John. Why do you think they started getting cross with James and John? The disciples felt that James and John were showing off and that James and John thought they were the best and most important disciples. Do you remember a time when you were cross at someone for showing off because they thought they were more important or thought they had something better or knew more? Can you remember what Jesus said to the disciples to stop them from being angry at each other? Jesus said that the greatest disciple was not the one who went around showing off his power, or money, or things. But rather that the greatest disciple must be like a servant humble and helping others in all that they do. Can you think of things that you can do to help people in our community, school or at home this coming week? Sometimes it may be difficult to think of someone else before yourself, and of having a good time even if you don't exactly get your way. These are all ways to serve by making someone else happy. It's through serving others that we can be great in God's eyes and it's important to think of others first.
