  5. Let us read todays Gospel. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John (20: 19-23) Glory to you, O Lord. It was late that Sunday evening, and the disciples were gathered together behind locked doors, because they were afraid of the Jewish authorities. Then Jesus came and stood among them. Peace be with you, he said. After saying this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples were filled with joy at seeing the Lord. Jesus said to them again, Peace be with you. As the Father sent me, so I send you. Then he breathed on them and said, Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive people's sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord, Jesus Christ.

  6. Reflection Today is Pentecost which is celebrated on the seventh Sunday (50 days) after Easter Sunday. Do you know what Pentecost celebrates? The descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles and other followers of Jesus. Can you think of symbols which represent the Holy Spirit? There are many including: wind, tongues of fire, rays of light, water, oil and a dove. Sometimes the Holy Spirit can be a difficult idea for us to understand and these symbols help us. In today s Gospel, Jesus breathes on the disciples and says Receive the Holy Spirit ? How is Jesus breath/the wind like the Holy Spirt? We can t see the wind, but we can certainly feel it on a windy day. We can see the leaves moving in the trees because of the wind, or a kite flying high in a sky. The wind can be very strong and powerful. How can we see the effect of the Holy Spirit? The Holy Spirit can work through us when we are kind to our family and friends, when we think about other people Why did Jesus give the Holy Spirit to his disciples and other followers? To give them the strength and confidence to spread his Good News.
