  1. St Edmund Campion Feast Day-December 1st

  2. Who was he? Edmund Campion (25 January 1540 1 December 1581) was an English Catholic Jesuit (a member of the Society of Jesus), priest and martyr(a person who is killed because of their religious or other beliefs). He was canonized in 1970 by Pope Paul VI as one of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales. He studied at Oxford and came to the attention of Queen Elizabeth I when she heard him speaking. This could have led him to a life of wealth and security, but Campion felt his call to the priesthood in the Catholic Church.

  3. Why did he become a saint? Edmund Campion could ve lived a peaceful life in Prague but when he heard there was trouble in England about religion he came to help. He answered an appeal for priests to go on a secret mission to England to minister to the Catholics there living in a state of fear and persecution. Edmund arrived in England disguised as a jewel merchant, and went about his work as a priest undercover. He wrote a famous manifesto about the Jesuit mission to England, known as Campion s Brag, which quickly attracted a lot of attention and probably led to his quick capture after less than a year. At 41 years of age Campion was imprisoned in the Tower of London, tortured, tried, and on 1st December 1581 he was hung, drawn and quartered alongside two other Jesuits at Tyburn.

  5. We will now say a prayer. Dear God, Wherever I may travel, May I always profess my faith in you. To whom I owe all my obedience. Grant that I may always have the courage: To preach the Gospel, To speak out against injustice, And to face all challenges without fear. For by your will, I will go where I am sent To carry any cross you lay upon me And never to despair. For the price is paid and the work is begun: It is of God; It cannot be overcome. So our faith is planted: So will our faith be maintained. Amen

  6. Thank you for listening!
