St. Josephs Catholic and Anglican High School Context St. Joseph's Catholic and Anglican High School unique only shared faith school in Wales (English-medium, 11 to 16 mixed voluntary-aided comprehensive) Most pupils come from Wrexham and the surrounding area. There are 689 pupils on roll. Pupils transfer to the school from up to 51 primary schools. Around 9% of pupils are entitled to free school meals. 16% of pupils live in the 20% most deprived areas in Wales. Around 20% of pupils speak English as an additional language. FSM cohort is not true reflection of deprivation at SJWXM

St. Josephs Catholic and Anglican High School PDG Addressing the needs of pupils A grant of around 47,000 per year over the past three years Provide enrichment and extra-curricular activities to increase the participation of our most vulnerable students, and to create an environment and culture where these pupils feel able to "stay" in school outside the normal school hours. This includes instrumental tuition. Part-fund a Maths and English intervention teaching - working to ensure that no FSM pupil falls behind. "Study+" - a regular homework and study club supported by Teaching Assistants, which provides a space for pupils to study each lunchtime and after-school. Funding for this initiative covers staffing, resourcing and transport home for those eligible. Ensure each vulnerable child has access to a dedicated mentor / coach. Motivational speakers for KS4 FSM pupils (master classes to engage pupils and support study skills) Thematic TA to work with FSM pupils who are also additionally disadvantaged by EAL or other vulnerable circumstances. Improve Effective Written Feedback throughout the school

  7. St. Josephs Catholic and Anglican High School Matrix of Vulnerability The matrix is colour coded as follows: Green: Amber: Red: Minor problem exhibited. Some concerns. Intervention required. Under usual circumstances: Green = 1 category ticked. Amber = 2 categories ticked. Red = 3 or more categories ticked.

St. Josephs Catholic and Anglican High School Matrix of Vulnerability Identification of at risk or vulnerable pupils A young person at risk is one who is likely to develop behaviour patterns which will adversely impact on their participation, attendance and achievement in school. When a young person is deemed to be at risk , St Joseph s will appoint a key worker to provide early intervention which will seek to ensure the presence, participation and achievement of the individual concerned.

  9. St. Josephs Catholic and Anglican High School Matrix of Vulnerability Allocation of Key Workers The key worker will be, in most circumstances, a member of the School staff. The key worker will be chosen by the Pastoral Leader of Learning (PLOL). They will be someone with whom the pupil has a positive relationship. Their role will be to meet with the pupil, to monitor progress and to alert the PLOL if there is improvement, deterioration or if the situation is maintained. A key worker might be: Pastoral Leader of Learning Leadership Group Link Attached Pastoral Staff Form Tutor Teaching Assistant Learning Coach (reduced provision2015-2016) SENCO (nil provision2015-2016) Pupils that are colour coded red (meeting three or more criteria from the matrix of vulnerability) will receive key worker support. Subject Teacher The PLOL may decide that some pupils coded amber might benefit from key worker support.

  10. St. Josephs Catholic and Anglican High School Matrix of Vulnerability Procedural Information In the first half term of each term, PLOL s review the matrix with their Pastoral Team. By half term they submit their reviewed matrix to the Pastoral Assistant Headteacher, who is informed of all necessary interventions. During the term, the matrix may be presented to a Senior Leadership Group Meeting where pupils colour coded red will be reviewed by the SLT. Key workers should meet with pupils at least once a half term and key workers should meet with the PLOL to provide appropriate feedback which will inform the next review of the matrix.

  12. St. Josephs Catholic and Anglican High School Matrix of Vulnerability Form Tutor Time In order to monitor and intervene with all pupils, the school has adopted Form Tutor Time. Each Form Tutor is given a 1 hour period a fortnight to facilitate opportunities to meet with individuals in their form. This allows pupils to have the opportunity to discuss with their Form Tutor any issues-academic or pastoral. Problems can be identified and interventions applied as required. Form Tutors will feedback to PLOLs or Child Protection Co- Ordinator (as appropriate). PLOLs will act immediately or seek support from Assistant Headteacher. Matrix pupils, including FSM pupils, are given priority for FTT but all pupils are seen by their Form Tutor.

  15. St. Josephs Catholic and Anglican High School Matrix of Vulnerability Do you feel that Study+ is making a difference for any of your FSM pupils? Can you provide any evidence? Staff reported that for those FSM pupils that they taught: Pupils were able to print lyrics outside lessons and practice in lessons; this has stopped surfing the net during lesson time and pupils have been more focussed in the lessons. Lower school - if FSM pupils use Study+ they tend to produce better presented work because printing images and using a computer aids information gathering Homework provided through Moodle can be accessed by all More printers / facilities in Study+ Homeworks are completed regularly and handed in. Students who have failed to produce homework previously have produced good work when encouraged to attend Allows pupils to prepare more thoroughly for presentations
