2025 HIT Fund application guidelines
HIT Fund application guidelines The HIT Fund awards are for Stanford University innovators whose work has progressed towards developing solutions for specific commercial applications. The awards are intended to provide the advisory support for the team to develop a business-centric mindset and funding for critical de-risking activities that enable the team to swiftly move from research innovation to technology transfer or securing startup funding. Please complete the application outlined in section two of this document and save as a single PDF file. HIT Fund award components Milestone Milestone- -based Funding based Funding While the maximum award is $250,000, the large majority of projects will be funded up to $150,000 Funding is intended to address only a minimal set of milestones minimal set of milestones most critical for technology transfer or external funding Milestones and budget will be reviewed and validated by external reviewers Advisory Support Advisory Support Robust commercialization expertise tailored to each team team advisors who understand your market and have zero-to-one experience, industry and domain experts, 1:1 sessions with SBIR and incorporation legal experts Hands-on business partner a dedicated MBA fellow, mentored by the HIT Fund, will embed with the team to lead the team to validate product/market fit hypothesis, a go to market strategy and a business model Guidance to develop and execute on a critical path spanning both technical and business aspects that derisks the issues most critical for investors Preparation for pitching develop a compelling story that can withstand investor/licensee scrutiny, vet with friendly VCs and receive warm introductions to relevant VCs/partners 5
Application preparation support Q&A Sessions o Sign-up for a session on the HIT Fund website o Sessions will be held on o Thursday, May 22nd, 4PM o Wednesday, June 4th, 10-11AM o Monday, June 9th, 2-3PM Hear stories from former and current PIs about how the HIT Fund helped them commercialize their technology o Monday, May 30th, 1-2PM o Register here One-on-one sessions o A limited number of sessions will be offered in in late May and early June o These time slots are posted on the HIT Fund website o Applicants expected to attend a Q&A session prior to a 1:1 session o Applicants must submit a draft two days prior to their scheduled session 6
Application evaluation process and criteria Review Process o A committee of the HIT Fund staff, external advisors, and affiliates will provide input to evaluation of applications o Finalists will present in-person to key internal and external advisors on a pitch day held between September 8-19th. Evaluation Criteria o Clearly identified market need o Compelling competitive advantage o Potential for a meaningful societal or economic impact o Key deliverables that will enable technology transfer or startup funding o Likelihood of success of the proposed deliverables within the budget and award timeframe 7
Terms and Conditions of the Award Inventions and Intellectual Property: Any new IP conceived or generated during the program must be disclosed to the Stanford Office of Technology Licensing (OTL). Milestones: Each project will have a set of critical deliverables with objective technical and commercialization milestones. Achieving each milestone is a key decision point for assessment of progress and continued funding. Publications: The HIT Fund must be cited in all publications and presentations that describe the work supported by the HIT Fund. Program Participation: Awardees may be asked to participate in HIT Fund events throughout the award period. Reporting requirements: o Quarterly reviews of progress against milestones with HIT Fund personnel and team advisors o Monthly calls with the HIT Fund team and team advisors, if appropriate o Final report presentation to Project Advisory Team 8

The solution What is your solution and how does your developed technology enable it? What are the key technical features and innovations of the solution? Why will your solution win in the market? How will the key stakeholders be impacted by the adoption of your solution? What customer discovery work has the team done to validate the solution? If not validated, include as a HIT Fund milestone.
Potential market and early adopters What market or clinical indication are you targeting? Size? Who are your target early adopter customers? Size? Are there larger customer segments you can target later? If any of the above are TBD, include as a HIT Fund milestone 17
Commercialization strategy How does your solution fit into the existing industry value chain/clinical workflow? How will it be delivered to the customer? What are the critical partnerships you need for success? Has an initial techno-economic/health economic analysis been done? If so, what are the key takeaways? What are the preliminary approaches for regulatory and reimbursement (life sciences)? If any of the above are TBD, include as a HIT Fund milestone 18
