STAR Forward Upgrade Plan Overview
This document outlines the STAR Forward Upgrade Plan proposed by Carl Gagliardi at Texas A&M University. The plan includes replacing FMS with Pb-scintillator EMcal, using APDs for read-out, and implementing Si disks for tracking. The design allows for greater particle discrimination and vertex determination. The cost estimation and detailed applications like Drell-Yan processes are also discussed.

Basic plan Replace FMS with 2 x 3 m2wall of PHENIX Pb-scintillator EMcal Use APDs for read-out, similar to ALICE Insensitive to magnetic field and can tolerate the radiation field 2.3 < eta < 4.0 Back it with a 4-interaction length thick Pb-scintillator plate Hcal Very compact design allows it to fit in front of the DX magnet 2.3 < eta < 3.7 3 Si disks for tracking Charge-sign discrimination Zvertexdetermination to separate particles from different interactions within the same bunch crossing Our Heavy Ion colleagues are still investigating if/how they might utilize the forward tracking in A+A Enlarge the existing pre-shower detector to cover full 2 x 3 m2area Total cost: approximately $6M 2 STAR Forward Upgrade -- Carl Gagliardi
