State Tourism Director Project Timeline & Directions Project Overview: Students will become the director of tourism for a state, research, and write a report on one of the 50 states that includes a bibliography. Students will create a file folder report using the packet provided, a technology based project to accompany the research and packet, and an artifact to display during the celebration. During the celebration, students will share key facts from their report, teach visitors about their state, and encourage them to come visit. State Tourism Director Project Scoring Guide File Folder Project Ideas and content points earned Section & Criteria to be Included:Complete each section in the packet. All of the work must be written in your own words. Each section should include the state name and your name. Use your neatest writing. For extra credit, you may complete additional projects. Map of State Draw a detailed map of your state. Tracing is NOT allowed. Label the major rivers, the capital, and five of the state s largest cities. Label the states or bodies of water surrounding it. Color the map attractively. You will cut out the map and glue it to the front of your file folder. Later, you will print the state s name, your first and last name, your grade level, and the date on the front of your file folder. ComeVisit My State Complete the page in the packet. This will be attached to the inside of the file folder on the left side. Be sure to write neatly. /10 /8 State Symbols You will design a State Symbols page and attach it to the back of the file folder. Include the U.S. map, state flag, state quarter, state bird, state tree, state flower, and make a license plate for your state. Draw each item onto the paper in the packet and then glue it to the back of the file folder. Write a persuasive paragraph. Introduce your state and why you chose it. Your goal in the introduction is to encourage people to visit your state. (You will write this section LAST after you have learned all you can about your state). Tell about the crops that people grow and natural resources in your state. What are they? How do people earn a living in your state? /8 1) Introduction /8 2) Agriculture and Industry /6 3) Geography Write a paragraph. What are the most important physical features of your state? Tell about the major mountains, rivers, lakes, etc. What recreation opportunities are there as a result of the natural geographic features of your state? Why would people want to travel to and visit your state? What tourist attractions and points of interest are there? What would people do if they visited your state? /6 4) Things to See and Do /6 5) Famous People Write a paragraph about five to eight famous people from your state. Tell their name and what makes them famous. /6 6) Interesting Information Make a list of interesting facts and trivia about your state. These should be fun facts that people might be interested to learn. /6 7) History Timeline Make a list of 5 events in your state s history. Add dates on the lines and facts in the box. /6 8) Colleges and Universities If you were to attend college in your state, what colleges would you consider? Make a table showing three to five colleges or universities from your state. Include the name of the city the college is located. Add the resident tuition and fees plus room and board to get a total cost per year. Design a postage stamp from your state to pass out to classmates at our celebration event. In the stamp, include the state name and important pictures that help represent your state. Use only black pen or pencil only. List all sources used /6 9) State Stamp /6 Bibliography /6 Timeliness Report sections were completed on time /6 Neatness/Quality Care was taken to make the final product attractive and easy to read /6 Extra Challenges Extra challenge project completed. Credit will only be given IF all of the above parts of the project are finished first. If any parts above are missing, NO EXTRA CREDIT point will be given. Project Scoring Guide Artifacts DIORAMA Your artifact: Clearly and obviously represents your state The scene is complete: miniatures, natures, and/or building The pieces are secure and the project can be moved without causing damage MODEL Your artifact: The model is 3-D and clearly and specifically represents a person or thing from the state The model is very detailed and is a scale model of something that really exists The model can be moved easily with causing damage. The model has some details and seems to represent something from the state The details from the model could be more defined and specific Moving the project causes minor damage POSTER Your artifact: The poster contains at least one picture, drawing or image that clearly and specifically represents the state The poster is detailed has a title (the state name, at least one caption, and an interesting fact) ITEM/FOOD Your artifact: The item/food is specifically related to and represents the state The item is something that could be purchased from a gift shop. The food is something that someone could buy in the state to eat. The item/food is related to the state but may be something that can be obtained at another state as well. The item/food may be available in the state but can also be found at another state. 4 It takes a few moments to identify the state from the scene The scene is mostly complete: some of the necessary elements may be missing Moving the project causes minor damage While the poster s image, drawing or picture has some details, it lacks the clear representation of the state The poster may be missing one of the required elements or the elements are lacking in specific details. How to Assemble the Report Regular File Folder Method File Folder Front: Glue the map and write a title. Print the state s name, your first and last name, your grade level, and the date on the front of your file folder. File Folder Tab: Write the state name and your name Inside Left: Staple or glue the Come to My State page Inside Right: Staple the report and bibliography at the top of the pages on the inside right side of the folder Folder Back: State Symbols Fun Tip: For a scrapbooked look, glue a backing paper that is slightly larger than the report paper behind the report pages before attaching to the file folder.
State Tourism Director Project EXTRA CHALLENGES This is a list of challenges for the fast finishers and eager learners. Students may choose to do one or more of these activities while the rest of the class finishes up their reports. These are EXTRA CREDIT. *If the other parts of the project are not completed but you have done one or more of this extra credit work, you will NOT receive EXTRA CREDIT points. Extra Credit can ONLY be earned if the base project is completed first. 1. Create a travel brochure, pamphlet or brochure that encourages people to come to your state. This can be by hand or digital. 2. Find a recipe from your state that is representative of your state. Write a recipe card and make the recipe. Take a digital photo of the dish and get reactions from family members who sampled your dish. 3. Find news articles and current event articles from your state. Summarize the main headlines and what they are about. Make a newsletter page about the articles. 4. Create a board game for your state where people would travel to important places and learn about your state. Make it fun and interesting to play. Be sure you create clear and specific directions on how to play and how to win. 5. Draw some other maps about your state. Consider a map showing the economic products, a relief map, or map showing the major places of interest. 6. Design a t-shirt logo with picture and wording that is fun and that people would purchase and wear.
State Tourism Director Project Gathering Research Information About Your State: During this research project, you will read and locate information from multiple sources: 1. Books 2. Encyclopedia (on-line or print) 3. Another Internet Sources/Websites WRITTEN REPORT SECTIONS Begin your research using library books and information from the Internet. Take notes and record information in the packet provided, which will be used for your pre-writing and your drafting. Each report section should be written on its own sheet of paper. Label each section with the state name and your name. Your final copy will be some form of multimedia typed report, PowerPoint, Prezi, video/pictures, or other creative technology based project. Everything in the packet/draft should be included in the final. 1) Introduction Introduce your state and why you chose it. This should be a persuasive paragraph to try to get people to visit your state. 2) Agriculture, Industry and Economy Make a list. How do people earn a living in your state? Include the name of the state and important pictures or images that help represent your state. You will receive two stamp templates. One is for the rough draft and the other is for the final copy. The rough draft should be a sketch based drawing in pencil only. The final copy will be colored using three selective colors to give your stamp just enough color to make it attractive. Attach the bibliography as the last page of your project. Remember to use information you gathered from three sources: Book, encyclopedia (on-line or print), and another Internet source. Research Disagreement Note Sometimes, during research, you will notice that facts are different. When this happens, you should check more sources of information to gain more information. In your report, state what the majority of the information said.
State Tourism Director Project File Folder Organization - Regular File Folder Method Your teacher will give you a file folder when you are ready to assemble your final report. File Folder Front Cover Map Draw a detailed map of your state. Use this map to draw your own map of the state. Tracing is NOT allowed. This will become the report cover for your project. File Folder Inside Right Your written project will be attached here. Write each report section on a separate sheet of paper. All of the work must be written in your own words. Each page should include the section title and your name. Use only the front side of the paper and use your neatest writing. For extra credit, you may include other information, pictures and captions in this section. Ask your teacher for details. File Folder Back You will design a State Symbols page and attach it to the back cover. Include the U.S. map, state flag, state quarter, and make a license plate with your name for your state. Print or draw each item and glue onto the paper. Write the Internet address for each clip art used at the bottom of the page labeled Bibliography of Sources to credit the source of the images used. State Tourism Director Project ARTIFACTS The final part of the project you will create an artifact to accompany your report. Your artifact will need to be something that represents your chosen state. What is an artifact? an object made by a human being, typically an item of cultural or historical interest. What can your artifact be? Diorama a model representing a scene with three-dimensional figures The diorama should be something that when viewed, it is extremely obvious that the scene represented if from your state. Model a three-dimensional representation of a person or thing or of a proposed structure, typically on a smaller scale than the original. A model is different from a diorama as it is more like a statue rather than a scene. Again, it has to obviously represent your state. Poster a large printed picture used for decoration The picture or pictures depicted on the poster should create a mural or something that makes your state stand out as a place to visit. Item something that would be found This item might represent an item that someone could purchase at a gift shop if they were to visit your state. DO NOT BUY this item online. You need to make a sample of it. Food an item that can be eaten. The food item may be something the someone may choose to eat while visiting your state. Be careful about allergies to food. If this is something you what to do, APPROVAL is REQUIRED!!!
