DEVELOP STRATEGIC ACTION PLANNING TOOL 2023-2024 ACTION PLAN ALIGNED TO NAF S QUALITY REVIEW PROCESS Instructions: Review your academy s 2022-2023 Academy Assessment (AA) scores. For each element (Academy Development & Structure, Advisory Board, Curriculum & Instruction, and Work-Based Learning), identify all standards of practice with scores less than or equal to 20 or other scores designated for improvement. For identified standards, select or create appropriate goals and strategic action steps to ensure the academy meets the AA requirements of the chosen standard. Review this planning tool, copy and paste selections into your academy s Action Plan, then add timelines and assign an academy team member.
DEVELOP STRATEGIC ACTION PLANNING TOOL ACADEMY DEVELOPMENT & STRUCTURE Goals Standards of Practice Strategic Action Steps Implement an open choice enrollment process to ensure all students are eligible to enroll in the academy. Recruit all students, including low performing, special education, and second language. Ensure academy enrollment reflects school or district demographics. Student Recruitment & Enrollment Enroll 50 students or more but at least 20 students per grade level in the academy program. Enroll 200 students (4-year program) for large schools ( 1,000) or at least 20% of the high school s total enrollment for smaller schools (< 1,000). Allow student choice of a career pathway, program of study course selection, project/assignment topics, and work-based learning experiences. Provide support systems to ensure students academic and social success including academic monitoring and planning activities that encourage students to connect with peers and caring adults (teachers, family, mentors, alumni & advisory board members). Create academy structures that promote student agency and help students develop positive relationships with peers and adults in their network. Personalized Learning Environment Access and analyze NAFTrack Certification (NTC) reports for student progress regarding completion of NTC requirements. Track and monitor work-based learning (WBL) participation data at the student level to ensure equity in student participation. Use academy reports in ASH and NAF Student Survey results to identify academy trends and to highlight areas with growth potential. Access NAFTrack, WBL Participation Tracker, Academy Support Hub (ASH) reports and NAF Student Survey data to determine academy and student progress and to identify practices in need of improvement. Data Collection & Review Create an action plan to address elements and standards of practice in need of development based on AA scores. Analyze AA results to identify strategic action steps required to meet all standards of practice within NAF s design and update your online Action Plan.
DEVELOP STRATEGIC ACTION PLANNING TOOL ACADEMY DEVELOPMENT & STRUCTURE Goals Strategic Action Steps Standards of Practice Develop academy leads who collaborate with the academy team to coordinate and share the leadership of the academy program, work-based learning (WBL), and college and career readiness (CCR). Establish a strong NAF academy identity within the school to instill a sense of community and student pride in the academy. Enhance academy team development through a distributive-leadership structure and ongoing collaboration that promotes continuous improvement in WBL, CCR, and student academic achievement. Academy Leadership Advocate for the academy by articulating the value of a NAF academy in developing a career pipeline for local businesses. Use social media to advertise academy programs and events and as a vehicle to share best practices and impact stories. Present academy best practices at school, district, state, CTE meetings, and NAF Next. Promote the academy and share best practices with stakeholders using various platforms. Collaborate weekly/bi-weekly/monthly to plan and coordinate academy curriculum, projects, WBL and CCR activities. Monitor and support students not on track for NTC. Organize and lead regular collaboration time for three or more members of the academy team. Professional Learning Attend NAF Next and other NAF and CTE training. Use resources in NAF s Academy Support Hub (ASH) to create a professional learning plan, including Professional Learning Modules, Educator Certifications, and NAF generated/curated micro-Credentials. Participate in ongoing professional learning to increase the fidelity of implementation of NAF s design.
DEVELOP STRATEGIC ACTION PLANNING TOOL ADVISORY BOARD Goals Strategic Action Steps Standards of Practice Recruit at least ten (10) AB members with 80% representing business, industry, and postsecondary education. Develop student leaders who interact with AB members to coordinate and implement the WBL plan. Develop and sustain an active advisory board (AB) to support work-based learning (WBL) activities. Advisory Board Membership & Operations Develop by-laws with AB to govern the operation of AB. Host planning meetings with AB to create a strategic action plan with clear annual outcomes. Share academy data with AB to inform action planning regarding critical areas of support required for academy growth. Produce operational documents to guide the growth and functions of the advisory board. Collaborate with the AB and teachers to develop and support the WBL plan and calendar. Identify AB leaders to lead and manage designated portions of the WBL plan. Develop systems to report AB impact on student outcomes and periodically share with AB and the school community. Identify opportunties for AB to offer input on career-themed curriculum, participate in classroom activities, and provide professional learning opportunities for academy staff. Create a WBL plan that actively supports student learning with direct and intentional input from AB members. Support for Learning Engage the community to promote and sustain NAF career academies as an integral part of local workforce and economic development systems. Articulate an understanding of the AB s role in the academy s mission. Provide AB resources to support engagement efforts with community leaders and employers. Support for Sustainability
DEVELOP STRATEGIC ACTION PLANNING TOOL CURRICULUM & INSTRUCTION (PROGRAM OF STUDY) Goals Strategic Action Steps Standards of Practice Develop a career-connected Program of Study featuring a comprehensive sequence of courses that adheres to OCTAE's Programs of Study Design Framework. Ensure the academy s Program of Study contains the supporting elements instrumental for creating and implementing high quality, comprehensive programs of study and aligns with one of the US Department of Education s 16 career clusters and associated pathways. Access NAF s Future Ready Learning site for curriculum and resources. Academy Coursework Develop extended-length authentic projects for students that relate to the academy s career pathway and provide innovative solutions to real-world challenges. Provide opportunities to include industry professionals in completing authentic projects. Showcase project outcomes in dynamic and compelling presentation formats. Use authentic project learning experiences to solve real-world challenges. Provide industry certifications and advanced/dual enrollment courses. Expose students to various career pathways within their designed career clusters. Provide structures for students to navigate the postsecondary system including researching/visiting colleges, completing college applications, entrance exams, and FAFSA. Implement activities to build students college and career readiness. College & Career Readiness
DEVELOP STRATEGIC ACTION PLANNING TOOL WORK-BASED LEARNING Goals Strategic Action Steps Standards of Practice Provide a continuum of work-based learning experiences that include career awareness, exploration, and preparation activities that build in sophistication, duration, and intensity. Collaborate with AB to develop and execute the WBL plan and calendar. Schedule WBL activities for all levels within the academy program. Work-Based Learning Program Utilize WBL reflection forms within the WBL Participation Tracker. Ensure students complete NAF s Student Survey each spring. Solicit student voice and input to guide WBL program planning. Use the WBL Participation Tracker to collect data on WBL activities at the student level (beyond internships). Analyze individual student participation in WBL activities to ensure equitable participation. Increase internship opportunities through an AB campaign to recruit additional support from community partners and businesses. Use internship resources in ASH to prepare employers and internship supervisors to host high-quality internships. Provide training for internship supervisors to complete the Internship Assessment.
