AMICI partner and industry days WP2: Strategy Walid Kaabi - CNRS/IN2P3/LAL Padova, April 19th2017
It is all about sustainability! The common interest of labs and industries is to preserve at best the acquired resources at the end of a project contribution to be ready for the future challenges. This resources could be: A developed technology infrastructure Qualified man-power An acquired know-how One need to know what are the future challenges to make the wind favourable 11/05/2025 AMICI Partner and Industry days 2
Goals of the strategy WP Provide the European industries with a clear view of the strategic science and technology roadmaps for the future accelerator and SC magnet based Research Infrastructures worldwide. Therefore, they will be in a strong position to compete on the global market. Identify the elements necessary for a successful implementation of a viable and sustainable cluster of Technological Infrastructures (TIs) in partnership with industry. Create an ecosystem helping applications with high industries (large or SME). to enhance basic research and impact through societal laboratories and 11/05/2025 AMICI Partner and Industry days 3
How to proceed? To set up an efficient strategic analysis, the WP2 have to: Collect, update and identify the Key Technology Areas (KTAs) essential for the sustainability of the Technology Infrastructures in which the most progress and innovation are expected. Collect and analyse the scientific roadmaps and the agendas of the Research infrastructures in Europe (ESFRI) and in the global landscape. The cross-reference of both analyses will allow to define the technological roadmap for the different identified KTAs, showing thereby the opportunities and needs that could orient and sustain the activity of the TI. 11/05/2025 AMICI Partner and Industry days 4
Organization of WP2: The WP2 will be subdivided in 3 sub-tasks: WP2.1: Key Technological Area (CNRS, IFJ PAN, CEA, STFC) WP2.2: Global Landscape (CEA, CERN, INFN, CNRS) WP2.3: Accelerator and SC Magnet Technology Infrastructures Sustainability (UU, DESY, CEA, CNRS, CERN) WP Leader WP.1 Leader WP.2 Leader WP.3 Leader WP2: Strategy W. Kaabi W. Kaabi O. Napoly T. Ekel f 11/05/2025 AMICI Partner and Industry days 5
Milestones and deliverables: Deliverables: D2.1: Report on Key Technological Areas (KTA) and prospective outlook (M24). D2.2: Report on the Technological Roadmaps for the different KTA (M24). D2.3: Report on propositions to guarantee the long term sustainability of TIs (M30). Milestones: M2.1: Updating of the Key Technological Areas (M9). M2.2: Collection of the scientific Roadmaps (M12). M2.3: Intermediate report on sustainability (M18). 11/05/2025 AMICI Partner and Industry days 6
WP2.1: Key Technological Areas A prospective analysis of future trends in Key Technology Areas will be performed taking into account: The existing basic research activity, The applications with high societal impact, The emerging technologies (interaction with WP4), The new industrial needs (interaction with WP5). 11/05/2025 AMICI Partner and Industry days 7
Link with other WPs: WP1.2: Organization of industry participation WP2: Strategy WP1: Management WP4: Innovation WP5: Industrialisation WP3: Cooperation 11/05/2025 AMICI Partner and Industry days 8
WP2.1: Key Technological Areas The inputs for this prospective survey will be: The census of key technologies performed by TIARA for Accelerator R&D. The work done in EUCARD2. In addition, a close link will be maintained with the networking program currently running, aiming to improve the performances of Accelerators (ARIES) or to promote the societal applications of nuclear physics accelerators, in particular in medical applications (ENSAR2). 11/05/2025 AMICI Partner and Industry days 9
WP2.2: Global Landscape Identify the future trends and need of the scientific or applied domains using accelerators and SC magnets by collecting and analyzing the existing strategic roadmaps, at the national, European and world levels. Additional input from the innovation market survey from WP4, will allow to identify the synergies, possible mismatches and potential for innovation. All this will be used to assess the workload, the capabilities and, whenever possible the priorities of the European Technological Infrastructures, constituting Technological Roadmaps, in the different Key Technological Areas identified in WP2.1. 11/05/2025 AMICI Partner and Industry days 10
WP2.3: Technology Infrastructures Sustainability As a first step in this sub-task, Tord Ekelof will send soon to the institute representative in the General Assembly a request for a survey about the way the TIs are managed, funded and supported currently: The increasing size of the large scale scientific Accelerator Research Infrastructures and the concomitant decrease in their numbers lead to an increase in the fluctuations with time of the need for the support from the Technological Infrastructure Laboratories. This and other factors, like the lack of understanding on the political level of the consequences of the change of paradigm described above, is causing concerns regarding the sustainability of the Technological Infrastructure Laboratories. The study of this problem has been defined as specific task in AMICI that I am leading. In order to provide input to this study it would be essential to get a global picture of how the different Technological Infrastructure Laboratories in Europe collaborate with the Accelerator Infrastructures, how collaborative projects are created, agreed and financed as well as how the Laboratories are supported for these particular activities by the governmental agencies in their respective countries. 11/05/2025 AMICI Partner and Industry days 11
WP2.3: Technology Infrastructures Sustainability 1- Is your Technology Infrastructure Laboratory also a Research Infrastructure Laboratory, i.e. does it have an accelerator in operation with an active user community? 2- Does your Laboratory also provide test beams for accelerator and detector development work? 3- Which are the component developments and/or test projects, if any, that your Laboratory is currently pursuing for delivery to a Research Infrastructure Laboratory? 4- Which is the sharing of the costs in terms of personnel, infrastructure, operation and hardware between your Laboratory and the Research Infrastructure Laboratories for the projects in point 3. 5- Have you written a formal agreement to regulate the sharing of costs and the delivery of the results or is the agreement informal? 6- Please provide information on the amounts of the resources per year that your Laboratory is currently allocated with the purpose to contribute on component developments and/or test projects to Research Infrastructure Laboratories and from which funding sources these resources are provided. Please also indicate how the amount of such resources allocated to your Laboratory has evolved with time and what your predictions for the future are. 7- Please provide some thoughts on how you think that the sustainability can be improved in your Laboratory and its activity to provide component developments and/or test projects that is currently pursuing for delivery to a Research Infrastructure Laboratory? 11/05/2025 AMICI Partner and Industry days 12
WP2.3: Technology Infrastructures Sustainability Next step could be to address a survey to industrials to have their feedback how to improve sustainability of their resources (Man power, Technical infrastructures, Know-how). Is this feasible from industrial point view? or should this be part of the work in WP4 and WP5? 11/05/2025 AMICI Partner and Industry days 13
Thanks to all for the attention 11/05/2025 AMICI Partner and Industry days 14
