Objectives Students will identify resources available on their campus for students of color Provide students strategies for coping with the pressures of: Being a student of color Pursuing a STEM degree Learning in a virtual environment Students will discuss the article Mental Health Support for Students of Color During and After the Corona Virus Pandemic Students will share their coping strategies Students will develop a plan for coping with stress for the 2021-2022 academic year
Managing the Pressure (10-15 minutes) Random Grouping (8 minutes) Take a couple of minutes to talk about what you do outside of academia to manage the pressures of your academic work. In what ways have you been able to manage the pressures of navigating your intersectionalities? Community Share (7 minutes)
Reflect and Share (7 minutes) Share your experiences with being forced to switch to virtual learning and the impact it had on you What strategies did you utilize to help you cope with the transition to online learning? Arnold s experience as a student and faculty member
Reading (Small Group) 20 minutes Read the section of the article assigned to your group. All groups will read the introduction and conclusion in addition to the ethnic group assigned. Strategies Take breaks from watching, reading, or listening to news stories Take deep breaths, stretch, or meditate Try to eat healthy, well-balanced meals. Exercise regularly. Get plenty of sleep. Avoidexcessive alcohol, tobacco, and substance use. Make time to unwind. Try to do some other activities you enjoy. Connect with others-talk with peopleyou trust about your concerns and how you are feeling. Treat yourself and others with grace Connect with your community- or faith-based organizations.
