Strengthening Asian American Ministry in UMC
Asian American Language Ministry Plan (AALM) in the United Methodist Church aims to increase vital Asian American congregations to fortify the entire church. AALM supports different ethnic caucuses and sub-ethnic groups, providing funding, training, and resources to enhance leadership, church growth, and community engagement. Asian American Language Ministry Plan AALM was established after the 1996 UMC General Conference. AALM s main goal is to strengthen the entire church by increasing the number of vital Asian American congregations in the UMC!
Asian American Language Ministry Plan AALM is one of the six different ethnic plans in the UMC: Hispanic Latino, Pacific Islander, Korean, African American, Native American and Asian. These are separate from the five ethnic caucuses.
Asian American Language Ministry Plan AALM is comprised of twelve different sub-ethnic caucuses: Cambodian, Chinese, Filipino, Formosan, Hmong, Indian (formerly South Asian), Japanese, Korean, Lao/Thai, Middle-Eastern, Pakistani and Vietnamese.
Asian American Language Ministry Plan AALM Plan is especially important today! Asian American communities in the U.S. are the fastest growing among all racial or ethnic groups, according to a 2017 Pew Research Study. By 2055 Asian Americans will become the largest ethnic group in the U.S. surpassing the Hispanics (2017 Pew Research Study).
Membership Growth in the UMC between 1996 2016* Asian-American membership in the United Methodist Church grew by +106% Pacific Islander membership grew +101% Hispanic membership grew +78%. African-American membership grew +37%. Native-American membership grew + 23%. Euro-American membership declined -21%. *Statistics from United Methodist Insight.
Asian American Language Ministry Plan AALM provides funding, training, language resources and technical support to any United Methodist Church or group that identifies as primarily Asian American. AALM focuses on four areas: leadership development, church growth, language resources, and working with the poor.
