ALL THE ANSWERS ARE HERE! THE HANDBOOK GUIDELINES Early Childhood and Elementary follow the same expectations and timelines this semester Supervision is provided by the College of Education
WHEN DO WE FIND OUT OUR PLACEMENT? Sometime in the first half of November When you get your placement, do the following: Email your cooperating teacher and introduce yourself. Email your supervisor to introduce yourself. Learn all you can about your school! Look at the school calendar and note holidays and PD days.
BACKGROUND CHECKS AND PHYSICALS Ask your cooperating teacher who you should contact about starting the district paperwork for your placement. Get started on all of this as soon as possible. You will need a state and federal background check. If there is a cost, you will be responsible for paying it. Some schools require a physical exam. Some districts require a some extra paperwork. Some districts will ask you for proof of vaccination and will have processes in place for those who are not vaccinated.
WHEN DO WE START AND END? WHAT ABOUT SPRING BREAK? WHAT ABOUT DAYS OFF? You will check your school s calendar and begin school on the same day as your cooperating teacher. This could be as early as January 3. Your last day will be Friday, May 6. You will have spring break according to your district's calendar. You follow your school s calendar for days off. You attend all faculty meetings, PD, and PT conference days. Do what your coop does!
HOW MANY HOURS DO I NEED? WHAT IF I GET SICK? You will earn over 600 hours during your student teaching experience. You are allowed: 4 sick days 1 professional day (to attend a job fair, go to an interview, etc.)
WHAT ABOUT COVID TESTING AND VACCINATIONS? Treat the school like a university building. Maintain your status as ACCESS GRANTED. Plan to show your status to your cooperating teacher each morning, if requested. If you are NOT vaccinated and are teaching up north, make sure to change your address in UIUC's system! If you fall out of testing compliance, you will lose access to certain UIUC technologies, such as Canvas.
WHAT ABOUT MY SUPERVISOR? Supervisors will hold an opening meeting with students and coops to review the semester s requirements. Supervisors conduct formal observations a minimum of six times over the semester. You will send lesson plans in advance of the observations and will pre- and post-conference as you did this fall. You will have a midterm and a final evaluation with your coop and your supervisor. Seminar is arranged with your supervisor and will likely be held via Zoom.
WHAT ABOUT LESSON PLANS There are clear guidelines in the handbook. Read them carefully. Consider using an online planning tool for your convenience. I really liked Planbook.com.
FINAL THOUGHTS This is it! Your time to shine! Good communication and a high level of professionalism are critical to your success! We are all here to support you, so always feel free to reach out with questions, concerns, and lots of celebrations! YOU GOT THIS!
