Work Experience & Transitional Jobs Training subsidies for employers - designed to support your business needs and to support participants in developing self-esteem, life strategies, career pathways and marketable job skills.
What is Work Experience (for youth 14-24) and Transitional Jobs (for adults 18+)? subsidized employment for individuals with no or limited work history + employers that need or want a fully subsidized temporary worker
Who subsidizes the employee? The workforce board is the employer of record, funded by the workforce innovation and opportunity act. The Greater Lincoln Workforce Development Area serves Lancaster & Saunders Counties. We provide employment and training opportunities to job seekers that lead to stable good paying jobs while meeting the needs of local businesses. The workforce area is governed by the Greater Lincoln Workforce Development Board and the Chief Elected Official, Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird. Services to businesses and job seekers are provided by Equus Workforce Services at the Lincoln American Job Center, 1111 O Street, Suite 205, Lincoln, NE 68508.
How much does the employee make? Work experiences & transitional jobs are positions that are entry-level. Wages are set by the board at $10 and $12 an hour respectively.
How many hours can the employee work? Participants may work no more than 40 hours a week. The duration of the work experience will be based upon the expected outcomes.
How does this benefit employers? Receive an employee for up to 500 hours. There is no cost to the employer and no commitment to retain the employee after the end of the contract.
What employers can participate? Work experience or transitional jobs may be in the private-for-profit sector, the non-profit sector or in the public sector. No participant will work in any subsidized work experience or internship position when the same or substantially equivalent position is vacant due to a hiring freeze or labor dispute.
What type of support does the employee receive? Employees work with a career planner and receive intensive case management to overcome any hurdles at the job site. Supportive services are available to help with transportation costs and work ready materials.
Objectives To help inexperienced workers forge a path to success. It can create a positive work history and reference which will hopefully help them gain skills and experience to transition into unsubsidized employment. To provide positive work-based mentorship experiences with committed role models. To facilitate opportunities for participants to explore career options. To provide participants with earning opportunities. To provide a safe work environment in compliance with worksite program policies, Worker s Compensation, and State and Federal Child Labor Laws (when applicable).
Work-site Expectations It is important that participants are directed, supervised and led to success by their work-based mentors. They will need clearly defined responsibilities and adequate supervision. You may sometimes have instances where they will need encouragement and/or redirection. Supervisors should act as role models and manage participants with leadership, clear expectations and frequent positive reinforcement. Direction to the participants should be clear and firm, but also understanding the potential for extenuating life circumstances. Our goal is to help participants understand workplace culture and requirements and to ultimately have a successful work experience. Keep in mind these are participants with varying levels of support and on occasion, they may need more guidance than a regular, waged employee.
Connect & Make a Difference We believe in the power of connection. By providing the right resources and opportunities, work experience and transitional job programs can help inexperienced workers forge a path to success. The workforce board is giving you the opportunity to be a connection that makes a difference. By participating in this partnership, you gain a short-term employee while investing in individuals from our community.
