Context Last Census in 2008, while UN recommends a census every 10 years Census data is necessary for country s development, but also for good governance and human rights protection Census is one of the transitional period commitments First digital Census in the country Improved use of census data is an integral part of census strategy De facto Census Population estimated at 45 m (urban, rural, nomads) Land of 1.8 million km2

Opportunities Sudan Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) has long experience in Censuses undertaken (CBS was created in 1903, conducted 5 Censuses, tens of large HH surveys ) Qualified CBS staff (statisticians, demographers, IT, cartographs ) A Post Enumeration Survey is planned (1st PES in the country) UNFPA Technical Assistance for the entire duration of the project External field monitoring is planned : International monitors (UNFPA TD, Norway and Sweden bureau of Statistics, census experts ) and national monitors (universities, experts, civil society...)

Challenges No experience in digital Censuses, but successful digital surveys experiences Choices between Satellite images from open-sources versus commercial ones Choices in mapping software: CSPro versus Survey 123 PES Matching exercise: manual / developed application, or both Unsecure areas : Statistical modelling?

  9. Conclusion Sudan s Census is at its start, and it s expected to satisfy most of the country s needs in data for the next ten years. CBS, with technical support from UNFPA, is able to conduct a reliable census. The project welcomes technical support from multi and bilateral agencies and countries.
