  2. Summer Faculty Compensation Summer Faculty Compensation Managing Course Offerings/Instructor Pay Managing Course Offerings/Instructor Pay It is the department chair s responsibility to manage the summer course offerings. Classes must be canceled at least two full business days before the term start date. Classes that are not canceled by this deadline must proceed as scheduled. Graduate and Undergraduate course enrollments with fewer than 10 students will be compensated on a pro-rated basis. Reference page 4 of the Summer Compensation document for guidance with teaching calculations. The enrollment at 5pm on the second day of classes will be used to calculate teaching compensation. There will be no changes to pay rates due to changes in enrollment (adds or drops) after this time. If a faculty member is not willing to teach a class for less than full pay, chairs will either need to find another instructor or cancel the course by the deadline.

  5. Summer Faculty Compensation Summer Faculty Compensation Mini Mini- -Terms Teaching Load and Time Allocation Terms Teaching Load and Time Allocation Teaching Load: Each class counts as one class towards the teaching load. Time Allocation: Each class counts as one-half (1/2) of a day in time allocation. Limited to a two-course load in any one summer mini-term, with a maximum of four classes over the entire summer.

  6. Summer Faculty Compensation Summer Faculty Compensation Non Non- -Teaching Activities (Extra Compensation) Teaching Activities (Extra Compensation) Some examples of non-teaching activities include sponsored research, administrative duties, internal grants, and external grants. Daily rates are earned only for the workdays. Weekends and holidays are excluded unless written documentation of specific work performed is submitted. Non-teaching compensation cannot exceed the faculty member s daily rate. This also applies to approved grant budgets. Teaching loads and time allocations will need to be used for calculations when non-teaching activities and teaching are combined. The daily rate limit applies to all combined non-teaching activities within the same time period.

  7. Summer Faculty Compensation Summer Faculty Compensation Miscellaneous Items Miscellaneous Items Internships: one paid internship class counts as one class for the teaching load. Compensation is based on the total enrollment. Internships not submitted for compensation do not count in the teaching load. MATH XXX A and B, when taught by the same instructor during the same time period will be considered as one (1) four-credit class for load and time allocation. Multiple course and/or lab sections require a minimum of 32 combined enrollment to offer more than one section of the same course and/or lab. Each section is treated independently to determine compensation. Bellow is an example of teaching compensation calculation based on 3 credit/contact hours. Adjustments should be made accordingly to classes with more or fewer credit/contact hours. 1-5 students (pro-rated using overload rate) 6-9 students (pro-rated using the percentage of 7.5%; see guidelines for exact percentages) 10-20 students (7.5%) 21-25 students (pro-rated using overload rate in addition to 7.5%) 26-29 students (pro-rated using the percentage of 7.5% in addition to 7.5%; see guidelines for exact percentages) 30+ students (15%) Note:Faculty members who earn more than 7.5% for any classes they teach may become ineligible to teach additional summer sections based on the 30% limit.

  8. Bucket Examples Bucket Examples Bucket #1 (Teaching) Bucket #2 Bucket #3 (Extra Compensation: Non-Teaching) (Teaching and Non-Teaching Combined) Teaching compensation = amount based on the total number of students in the class. Extra compensation = percentage of daily rate based on teaching schedule. Teaching = maximum of 30% of 9-month base salary Extra compensation = maximum daily rate (DR) Example: 1. Teaching: calculate total number of students using the Summer Compensation document. 2. DR ($291.13), calculate the eligible maximum daily rate using the formula in the table below based on the teaching schedule. 3. Take this DR and multiply by the number of days of the non-teaching duty for the maximum amount eligible to earn. 9-month base salary/195 (days) = DR Teach a total of four classes with no more than two classes per summer mini-term. Example: No teaching; only working on a grant (non-teaching) for 20 days, 7/3-7/31 (excludes 7/4 holiday) Example: Teach 2 May classes @ 15% + teach 2 Summer I classes @ 15% = total of 30% Total Daily Rate (don t round up) DR Fraction Formula DR=$291.13 x 20 (days) = $5,822.60 (drop cents the maximum amount of $5,822 can be earned during these 20 days) of DR Daily rate * 0.5 $145.5650 of DR Daily rate * 0.25 $72.7825 of DR Daily rate * 0.75 $218.3475
