This initiative focuses on characterizing core innovations in mixed farming systems, diagnosing their readiness for scaling, and laying the foundation for overcoming bottlenecks. It aims to apply scaling readiness to a significant portion of the innovation portfolio by 2025 through various assessment studies and collaborations with other initiatives. The objective is to enhance synergies, share costs, and prioritize investments to support sustainable agriculture practices.

  1. Sustainable Intensification of Mixed Farming Systems: Scaling Readiness Frija, Aymen, Haroon Sseguya* International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) *International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) Initiative Planning and Inception Meeting- Nepal 23 August 2022

  2. Objectives of scaling readiness Provide a detailed characterization of core SI-MFS innovations (WP1,2, 3 &5); Diagnose their current readiness for and/or use (WP2, WP3); and iii. Lay the foundation for strategies to overcome bottlenecks for scaling. WP3, WP5 i. ii. o The ambition is to apply scaling readiness to 26 50% of the total innovation portfolio. o At least 12 scaling readiness assessment studies (six Light Track and six Standard Track) will be published by 2025. www.cgiar.org

  3. Overview of innovations Build on innovations generated under: CGIAR research programs (e.g., LIVESTOCK, WHEAT, MAIZE, GLDC); specific SI projects, such as Africa RISING, CSISA, SIMLESA Innovations for SI of MFS include, among others: the diversification of cropping systems with multipurpose crops; improved forages and supplemental feeding of livestock; crop residue and manure management; Tools for assessing and targeting MFS innovations, etc. www.cgiar.org

  4. We are talking about an innovation BUNDLES/PACKAKGES (not a unique innovation) o In line with System transformation approaches o Evidence-based assessment of an innovation package o Reveals the potential and the key bottlenecks in the Innovation Package o Support teams in prioritizing investments and partnerships around bottlenecks o MEL Baseline www.cgiar.org Source: SR team Schut et al. 2021

  5. Potential linkages with other initiatives Scaling readiness assessment within MFS is expected to be coordinated with other initiatives (SAPLING, EiA, LCSR, HER+) to enhance synergies and share costs. www.cgiar.org

  6. Key actions Team formation (country level, other WPs/themes) Joint clarification/articulation of innovation bundles/packages Tool(s) refinement (in liaison with other initiatives, interventions) Planning and implementation (action plan, innovations to assess, country team) Feedback, adaptation www.cgiar.org

  7. Two key deliverables 1. Documented scaling ambition, vision of success, and roadmap for use of scaling readiness for selected priority core innovations. 2. Evidence-based scaling readiness assessment reports and related scaling strategies for innovation packages. www.cgiar.org
