Setting the Stage: Sustain Effective Practices
Our Challenge Introducing effective practices is not the hard part. Sustaining these practices and having them integrated into school systems and teachers routines is the hard part.
What is the knowledge gap? The knowledge gap is often thought of the gap between what we KNOW is effective and the implementation of practices aligned with what we know. Let s expand the knowledge gap to include not just what we know and what we do but also what we are able to sustain?
Why do we not sustain effective practices or programs? Blame the teacher Blame the student Blame the parents Blame the educational system Blame the lack of resources Blame fatigue How might we resolve these issues?
Is education the only field in which sustaining research-based practices is challenging? In a word, NO. Health care, nutrition, exercise, sleep, all aspects of wellness have incredibly difficult times SUSTAINING effective practices ..even when these practices can literally save our lives. Think about this: Compliance can be as low as 50% for health regimens as simple as taking a pill twice a day.
Sustainable Change (Sustainable change is) when new ways of working and improved outcomes become the norm. Not only have the process and outcome changes, but also the thinking and attitudes behind them are fundamentally altered and the systems surrounding them are transformed in support (UK s NHS, 2012, p.12)
