Tackling Terrorist Groomers in Online Gaming through AI-Based Tools
Project TOOLBAR aims to address the misuse of online gaming by extremists for terrorist activities, focusing on content dissemination, radicalization, recruitment, and combat training. The initiative will develop an AI-based platform to enhance the fight against terrorist groomers in online gaming environments by leveraging SSH research, NLP, data science, and network science. Through innovative tools and awareness campaigns, the project seeks to support law enforcement agencies in collaboration with gaming companies to safeguard digital spaces from extremist influences.

Proposal objective Project TOOLBAR is aimed at preventing and fighting against the use of online gaming culture as enabler of two main terrorist activities: content propagation, radicalisation and recruitment; virtual combat training. SMI2G 2022, 16-17 May 2022, Brussels The final goal is to support European law enforcement and judicial authorities in cooperating with gaming companies to tackle terrorist groomers on gaming platforms, video games, related apps and live-streaming services. To this aim, we will develop an innovative and validated AI-based platform including privacy-preserving tools, training curricula and awareness raising modules, which will exploit the maximum potential of SSH research, NLP, data science and network science. 2 Serena Bressan bressan@fbk.eu
Proposal concept 1. Addressing the nexus between online gaming and terrorism, identifying the scale of the presence of terrorists and violent extremists on online gaming platforms for radicalisation and recruitment, and investigating the modus operandi of terrorist groomers . 2. Accessing to and analysing in-game communication data (e.g. text, voice and video chat) to examine the misuse of the communication tools provided through gaming to exchange information and further elude investigations. 3. Assessing the impact of violent video games on terrorist activities (e.g. use of AR and VR games for combat training), while examining the trend of gamification of terrorism. 4.
