2 TAILORING YOUR RESUME TO A JOB DESCRIPTION Use these prompts in ChatGPT when applying for a job. PROMPT: Act as an expert resume writer with over 10 years of experience working with job seekers trying to land top jobs. I am going to share my target job description, and then my resume, with the end goal to tailor my resume to the job description. Let s start with the job description. What are the 5 most important responsibilities in this job description? [Copy and paste job description] Hint: Press Shift+Enter to go to a new line without executing the AI prompt in ChatGPT.
IDENTIFY KEY MISSING ITEMS FROM RESUME PROMPT: Based on these 5 most important responsibilities from the job description, write me bullet points for what key items are missing from my resume. Here s my resume: [Copy and paste resume without personal information] Use this information to customize your resume. It s not wise to let AI write your resume since it might make up experience or skills that you don t have. Use it instead to add or accentuate areas that are key to the position, which you can truthfully describe as part of your history.
INTERVIEW PREP AI PROMPTS PROMPT: Act as a career counselor with over 10 years of experience working with technical job seekers trying to land top jobs. I am going to share my target job description. What are the top five most likely technical questions I'll be asked in a job interview for the job description below, along with sample correct answers: [Copy and paste job description] PROMPT: Could you create a list of 5 behavioral job interview questions for this job with answers to these questions using SOAR (O=obstacle)? PROMPT: Could you create a list of 5 questions I could ask in an interview about this role?
5 AI PROMPTS FOR INTERVIEW PREP (CONT D) You won t want to use the sample answers to questions that AI provides; use them as a guide to construct and rehearse answers. They re a good starting point to know what to expect. Read over your answers to the technical and behavioral questions several times before your interview. You ll need to be prepared for anything, though sometimes people ask behavioral or tech questions; sometimes they mostly ask to elaborate on resume content. PROMPT: Can you write me a brief 'tell me about yourself' blurb to use in a job interview for this position? You ll want to customize the tell me about yourself and make sure AI didn t add incorrect content. You also might need to ask it to make the blurb shorter it provides several paragraphs full of fluff sometimes. The interviewer doesn t want you to literally tell them about yourself. They want to hear about your background as it relates to the role you re applying for.
6 OPTIMIZE YOUR LINKEDIN PROFILE WITH AI PROMPT: I'm going to copy and paste a job description below. Please create a LinkedIn headline suitable for attracting recruiters looking for candidates for this type of opening: [Copy and paste desired job posting details here] PROMPT: Please create a LinkedIn About statement based on the previously provided job posting details. As with other AI-generated content, edit the output to suit your needs and to assure accuracy. Your LinkedIn profile needs to remain more general and less geared toward an actual position than your resume, so choose a job description that s as close to your ideal position as possible.
7 OTHER CHATGPT JOB SEARCH USAGES AND CAUTIONS Be careful not to paste any of your personal information (name, email, phone number, etc.) into ChatGPT. You can copy and paste your resume into ChatGPT and ask it to proofread it, then ask it what changes were made. Take care to verify that it didn t add any incorrect information or remove anything important.
NOTES You no longer need to set up an account with OpenAI to use the free version of ChatGPT, but you may want to do it anyway, so that you can save your history. The graphics in this presentation were created using Microsoft s AI Image Creator, to maintain consistency with the deck s AI theme.
