What steps you can take to make responsible decisions. What factors influence your decisions, including peer pressure. How resistance skills help you resist pressure to make the wrong decision.

You are in Charge You are in charge of your health. You choose actions that are either healthful or harmful. Many factors influence your choices. Learning about those influences can help you make responsible health decisions.
Making Responsible Decisions You make responsible decisions all the time. Some decisions do no affect your health. Maybe you choose the clothes you wear to school. Other decisions DO affect your health. You might decide what to eat for lunch, what sport to play. Decisions about your health should be responsible ones. This means it is a choice that is responsible and safe. Follows the rules and laws and shows respect for yourself and others.
There are steps you can follow to help you make responsible decisions. For example, suppose a friend invites you to ride bikes. You do not have a helmet with you. First identify your choices. You could not ride bikes or ride bikes without a helmet.

Does it follow family guidelines? Does it show good character? If you answered yes to all of them, the choice is a responsible one.

You might prefer the taste of pizza instead of the salad. Other come from health concerns. Perhaps you are allergic to nuts and can t eat peanut butter.
Your family members strongly influence the choices you make. Perhaps your family usually eats soup for lunch. You may choose to eat soup also. Your friends also influence your choices. A friend might as you to try a sandwich she likes. Other people might influence your behaviors and decisions

Maybe a commercial shows your favorite athlete drinking a new juice. You might decide to try it because you like the athlete. Your friend might say that the athlete is a good role model.
Peers or people your age, include your friends and classmates. They may have a strong influence on the way you think, dress, and behave. The influence people your age have on you is called peer pressure. Peer Pressure

Practice Resistance Practice Resistance Skills Skills Its not always easy to say NO . Your friends may want you to do something harmful or unsafe. They may keep asking you even after you say NO . You may be tempted to make a decision that is not responsible.
Resistance Skills Resistance Skills Look at the person and say no in a firm voice. Be polite and calm, but don t back down. Give reasons for saying no . Explain why you won t do what the person suggest. Match your behavior with your words. Use a calm tone and facial expression. Don t act as though you agree with the person if you don t. It s okay to walk away if the person will not stop pressuring you. Ask and adult for help if you need it. An adult can help and support you.
