INTRODUCTION My name is Probation Officer Flowers I been with the Probation Department for 8 years I also worked in Juvenile Hall for 3 years I was previously a Social Worker with Children and Family Services for 15 years Currently working on my LCSW-Licensed Clinical Social Worker
Who are you? What is your name Age Tell me why you are here today What do you hope to get out of the class
Taking Responsibility for my choices Why are you here today-because you made a choice Review your committing offense Examine the ripple effect of your behavior Learn how to begin to make amends with the people you ve harmed Explore behavior patterns that may be similar to the ones that got you here in the first place Create a personal plan to begin to take responsibility for your actions.
The Chain of Choices When you decided to do what you did? Was there any warning signs? Did you play out the scenario in your head of what you were going to do? How did you choose to respond to your warning signs? Could you have ignored them and hoping they would go away? The Situation Thoughts (self-talk) Feeling Did you ask for help or did you seek out guidance from someone to tell you this might be wrong and there might be consequences for your action
TAKING RESPONSIBLILITY WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? You must first admit to Yourself that you did something wrong Understanding the Harm you caused to other people You need to take Ownership for the damaging effect of you criminal behavior Make Amends to those you have harmed Make a Commitment to a Positive and Live a Crime Free Lifestyle
Lets Discuss Your Committing Offense You will need to go back in time to relive the crime that brought you here today This will not be an easy process and it will take time You will start by understanding your committing offense Reflection period- the idea of thinking Process your committing offense to help you gain awareness and build new skills. Learning from your mistakes and to not make the same mistake twice.
YOUR CHAIN OF CHOICES Remembering that any point along the way you could have made a different choice Doing something positive could of had an impact on you to avoid your committing offense Surrounding yourself around positive people or just being positive Making better choices and learning from your past Doing the same thing over and over and getting the same response this is what we call INSANITY
INSANITY DEFINITION- Insanity, madness, and craziness are terms that describe a spectrum of individual and group behaviors that are characterized by certain abnormal mental or behavioral patterns. Insanity can manifest as violations of societal norms, including a person or persons becoming a danger to themselves or to other people. Insanity is doing the same thing, over and over again, but expecting different results.
The Ripple Effect How many of you have been a victim or know of someone who has been a victim of a serious crime? Imagine someone you love or care about being victimized. Placing Yourself in someone else s shoes.
Empathy Empathy is the capacity to understand or feel what another person is experiencing from within their frame of reference, that is, the capacity to place oneself in another's position.
How Can People be Harmed Physically Death Broken Bones Concussions Cuts, stab wounds, a single gunshot Physiological/Mental Health-stress related, lack of energy, panic attacks, PTSD, nightmares, headaches, fear of leaving home, weight gain
Financially Salary loss Medical Bills Repairing property Replacing stolen or damage item Insurance deductibles Replacing personal documents
Emotionally Fear/panic Insecurity Anxiety Anger/Frustration Depression Sadness Shame Vulnerability
What is the impact Definition of the word Impact have a strong effect on someone or something.
Areas of the victims lives harmed by your actions The victims family, friends and loved ones, and everyone who has contact with the victim. Their ability to trust Fear of leaving their home afraid to be victimized again Mental Health issues-they become paranoid and feel someone is watching all the time. So they locked themselves up in their home fearing they will be harmed again
The impact this will have on you and your personal life What about your family? How did this crime change how you love ones view your actions. How does this impact your parents/guardian/caregivers, sister, brother, grandparents, and other relatives
The impact on the community People living in in fear not wanting to go outside Lost of trust of others to not do them harm Stereotyping/Judging others
Making Amends Definition of Amends- compensate or make up for a wrongdoing. Righting my wrongs Being willing to admit that you don't know everything and that you were wrong about some things.
The harm you caused by one offense can touch a number of people Victim and their family Friends Community
Restitution Does Restitution make a person whole again? Can valuable items be replaced? Will paying the victim for their lost items make things even? Some things you can t put a price on. Ex. A heirloom given to you by your grandmother.
Making Amends to the Victims Family How much responsibility do you accept for your actions?
Making amends with myself How do I forgive myself for my past actions
The process of self-healing You may not be able to change the past, but your actions from this day forward. We can change the choices we make for negative to positive by taking ownership of your actions. We all make mistakes in life, but you must also learn from those mistakes. You can forgive yourself and experience personal growth and be at peace.
Harmful Behavioral Pattern Breaking the cycle Victimization and violence are sometimes accepted as part of doing time . Should you accept this statements and does doing the time fix the real problem of your criminal offense
Harmful Behavior Pattern If you find yourself repeating a harmful behavior pattern, take time to check your behavior before it becomes more of a problem.
Be Aware of your behaviors Watch your behavior when you are in the following situations: Any time you are in a situation that could potentially lead to a problem behavior. Following a situation that resulted in a negative outcome. Any time you are experiencing a strong, negative emotion reaction. When you are in conflict with someone When you are not feeling the way you want to feel or acting the way you want to act.
Victimization Victimization is the use of physical, verbal or emotional force to hurt, put-down, scare or control another person or take away his or her property or rights.
Forward Thinking A forward thinker is usually an optimist who believes that he will reach his goals and who expects to have more than he has today. A backward thinker on the other hand is a person who is stuck in the past with his old failures.
Creating a Plan of Action You are responsible for creating and commit to a plan of action for changing your criminal behaviors. Its starts with creating a responsibility plan for yourself to live a free of irresponsible and illegal behaviors. Knowing the difference between Right and Wrong
