Techniques to Create an Online Learning Community Identity Create your instructor profile including photo Post short videos Require student introductions (can be done in video format using Flip Grid) using specific directions Remind text system Create a cheat-sheet about your students personal info. to help you remember them Encourage students to set up their student profiles Be conscious of your online presence (dating profiles!) Be sure you know how to pronounce names or call them by a preferred name

Create expectations: let students know how to contact you and what your commitment is to responding to them, can they expect to see you in discussions? How will you be available to communicate with them? Post announcements regularly Let them know that you pay attention to Canvas analytics Create the expectation that students will communicate with the instructor but also amongst each other Mention students work by name- students will be motivated to have their work recognized

Techniques to Create an Online Learning Community Community Trust and reciprocity must exist in order to have a community Social spaces should be available to everyone in the class- give them time to connect amongst themselves without the instructor controlling interaction Give students the opportunity to share and contribute Ask for feedback and offer (limited) choice Allow students to give feedback to each other Check-in e-mails (individual messages to each student) with required responses One-on-one video conferencing (to review progress at mid-term, for example)
