OVERCOMING WORLDLINESS James 4:1-10
Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome. For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world our faith. Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? (1 John 5:1 5 NKJV)
; kosmos The word kosmos is translated world It can refer to that which is sinful (Ti 2:12) It can refer to that which is earthly (Heb 9:1; 2 Cor 7:33; Jn 3:12) Also earthly is the sense of comparison (Col 3:1- 2; Phil 3:19)...
; kosmos The word kosmos is translated world James uses the word world 4 times in his epistle Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world. (James 1:27 NKJV) Listen, my beloved brethren: Has God not chosen the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him? (James 2:5 NKJV) And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell. (James 3:6 NKJV) Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. (James 4:4 NKJV)
; kosmos Each time kosmos is used in the epistle, it is used in a negative sense perhaps with the exception of (Jas 2:5) Listen, my beloved brethren: Has God not chosen the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him? (James 2:5 NKJV) Some state, the idea in this verse is who the world calls poor
Or it could mean poor people in the world, as one textual variant has it. But the best text uses what we can loosely call a dative references which enables us to read poor from the world s point of view, or according to the world s measure, poor 1.Luke Timothy Johnson, Brother of Jesus, Friend of God: Studies in the Letter of James, (Grand Rapids, MI; Cambridge U.K.: William B. OVERCOMING WORLDLINESS The Reason For Worldliness The Danger and Result of Worldliness The Solution to Worldliness...
OVERCOMING WORLDLINESS The Reason For Worldliness Worldliness comes from internal desires (4:1-3) These verses transition from (3:13-18) Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by good conduct that his works are done in the meekness of wisdom. But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth. This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic. For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there. But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy. Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace. (James 3:13 18 NKJV)
Where do wars and fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members? You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. Yet you do not have because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures. (James 4:1 3 NKJV)
OVERCOMING WORLDLINESS The Reason For Worldliness Worldliness comes from internal desires (4:1-3) They don t come from God (1:13-16) James warns against deception (1:16; 1:21-22, 26; 3:13-16) That which comes from the world is distinguishable from that which comes from God (3:14-16 Cf 17-18; Gal 5:17)
Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by good conduct that his works are done in the meekness of wisdom. (James 3:13 NKJV) But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth. This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic. For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there. (James 3:14 16 NKJV) But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy. Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace. (James 3:17 18 NKJV)
For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. (Galatians 5:17 NKJV)
OVERCOMING WORLDLINESS The Reason For Worldliness We war in our members (Jas 3:5-6) Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell. (James 3:5 6 NKJV)
OVERCOMING WORLDLINESS The Danger and Result of Worldliness James is very direct about the result of worldliness (Jas 4:4) Unfaithfulness to God (4:4a; Jer 3:10 Cf Ezek 16:31-39)
OVERCOMING WORLDLINESS The Danger and Result of Worldliness Friendship with the world is hostility toward God (4:4b) Abraham was called the friend of God (2:23-24 Cf Gen 15:6; 22:2-11Cf Heb 11:17-19) Worldliness was what Sarah told Hagar to do (Gen 16:1-4). This is where wars come from!
OVERCOMING WORLDLINESS The Danger and Result of Worldliness All that is in the world is against God (1:27 Cf 1 Jn 2:15- 17) Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever. (1 John 2:15 17 NKJV)
OVERCOMING WORLDLINESS The Danger and Result of Worldliness We can t be a friend of the world and of God because of the requirements of friendship (Jn 15:13-14) Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one s life for his friends. You are My friends if you do whatever I command you. (John 15:13 14 NKJV)
OVERCOMING WORLDLINESS The Danger and Result of Worldliness God will not be second (4:5-6) Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, The Spirit who dwells in us yearns jealously ? But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble. (James 4:5 6 NKJV) The Scripture says (Ex 20:5; 34:14; Deut 4:24; 5:9; 6:15; Josh 24:19; *Zech 8:2-3) God longs for us (Jas 4:5-6 Cf Gal 5:17; Phil 1:8)...
Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, The Spirit who dwells in us yearnsjealously ? But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble. (James 4:5 6 NKJV) For God is my witness, how greatly I long for you all with the affection of Jesus Christ. (Philippians 1:8 NKJV)
OVERCOMING WORLDLINESS The Solution To Worldliness God gives grace to the Humble (Jas 4:6 Cf Prov 3:34) But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble. (James 4:6 NKJV) Surely He scorns the scornful, But gives grace to the humble. (Proverbs 3:34 NKJV)
OVERCOMING WORLDLINESS The Solution To Worldliness Submit to God resist the devil and he will flee from you (vs. 7 Cf 1 Pet 5:6-8) Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. (1 Peter 5:6 8 NKJV)
OVERCOMING WORLDLINESS The Solution To Worldliness Draw near to God and He will draw near to you (Zech 1:3; Mal 3:7; Heb 7:19) Therefore say to them, Thus says the LORD of hosts: Return to Me, says the LORD of hosts, and I will return to you, says the LORD of hosts. (Zechariah 1:3 NKJV) Yet from the days of your fathers You have gone away from My ordinances And have not kept them. Return to Me, and I will return to you, Says the LORD of hosts. But you said, In what way shall we return? (Malachi 3:7 NKJV) for the law made nothing perfect; on the other hand, there is the bringing in of a better hope, through which we draw near to God. (Hebrews 7:19 NKJV)
OVERCOMING WORLDLINESS The Solution To Worldliness Cleanse your hands you sinners (Isa 1:16) and purify your hearts you double-minded (1:5-8) Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean; Put away the evil of your doings from before My eyes. Cease to do evil, (Isaiah 1:16 NKJV) If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. (James 1:5 8 NKJV)
OVERCOMING WORLDLINESS The Solution To Worldliness Lament and mourn and weep and let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom (vs. 9) Blessed are those who mourn, For they shall be comforted. (Matthew 5:4 NKJV)
OVERCOMING WORLDLINESS The Solution To Worldliness Humble yourself in the sight of the Lord and He will lift you up (vs. 10; Isa 57:15; Matt 23:12) For thus says the High and Lofty One Who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: I dwell in the high and holy place, With him who has a contrite and humble spirit, To revive the spirit of the humble, And to revive the heart of the contrite ones. (Isaiah 57:15 NKJV) And whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted. (Matthew 23:12 NKJV)
OVERCOMING WORLDLINESS? Better to be of a humble spirit with the lowly, Than to divide the spoil with the proud. (Proverbs 16:19 NKJV) HUMILITY
