Introducing innovative statistical tools for testing new thematic modules in PICT household surveys related to cultural practices. Successfully capturing data on indigenous language skills, traditional production skills, and people's access to customary resources, providing valuable insights for policy analysis. Challenges lie in convincing policymakers of the importance of regular cultural statistics collection. Recommendations include integrating cultural modules into regular household surveys for social and cultural development monitoring.

  1. Session 5 - TYPPS Objective 3: New and innovative statistical tools and systems have been introduced Testing of new thematic modules for inclusion in PICT Household surveys Cultural Practices Gerald Haberkorn Director Statistics for Development Division 1

  2. Cultural Practice Background Development of new HH survey prototype provided a unique opportunity to test various thematic modules for NSOs to consider including in regular Household Surveys (e.g HIES, DHS) if relevant to national policy and demand for specific statistical information for policy monitoring 2

  3. Cultural Practice Achievements Successful capture of data related to cultural practice, and thus being able to provide countries for the first time with access to data informing on the current prevalence of o of indigenous language skills and use, o traditional production skills, and o people s access to and use of customary land, forest and marine resources; Capture all eight population-based NMDI cultural indicators, for which thus far, no regular data source was available. 3

  5. Cultural Practice 5

  6. Cultural Practice Challenges None during testing (looks like questions resonated with respondents, as coverage was excellent) Only challenge ahead might be convincing policy-makers and statisticians, that a regular collection of cultural statistics will not break the bank, but instead provide o valuable insights into changes in cultural practice/development, and o rich contextual information for informed social and economic policy analysis. 6

  7. Cultural Practice Recommendation With NSOs undertaking regular household surveys, and Pacific people proud of their cultural roots and heritage, NSOs might wish to include module/add additional questions (to address national cultural specifics ) in regular household surveys to provide an important barometer of social and cultural development. 7
