Through grassroots advocacy and public policy, they offer programs such as Adult Day/Community Participation, Recreation, Supported Living, Supported Employment, Lifesharing, and Advocacy.

The Arc of Northeastern Pennsylvania Vision Mission People with intellectual and developmental disabilities are entitled to live full, self- determined and respected lives. The Arc promotes and protects the human rights of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and actively supports their full inclusion and participation in the community throughout their lifetimes.
The Arc Overview The Arc of the US- The Arc of NEPA is one of over 600 Chapters The Arc is the largest organization dedicated to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families through grassroots advocacy and public policy. The Arc of PA- The Arc of NEPA is one of over 33 Chapters The Arc of Pennsylvania focuses on systems advocacy and governmental affairs, demonstrating leadership and guidance among all disability organizations in Pennsylvania. Points of Interest: The Arc is listed on the Procedural Safeguards of the IEP for support for parents and families. The Arc has led the movement to deinstitutionalize state centers and is responsible for the Right to Education - P.L. 94-142 providing all children a free, and appropriate public education.
History of The Arc of Northeastern Pennsylvania For over 65 years has been serving children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Arc Advocacy was instrumental in the movement towards community living and programs for individuals with I/DD. Locally, started in 1950 s by parents to advocate for educational rights for their children with I/DD. Has grown to serve multiple counties with various program options. Legislative advocacy helped establish one of the first Special Education classrooms in PA in the Scranton School District The Arc continues to be a strong voice for education rights, community supports, progressive legislation, and public awareness.

Overview of Programs What is Advocacy ? NOUN The Art of pleading or arguing in favor of something, such as a cause, idea or policy; active support. - American Heritage Dictionary
Advocacy at The Arc of NEPA Role as an Advocate for The Arc of NEPA : Grounded in basic principles of the Arc that the rights and dignity of individuals with IDD and their families will always be respected and honored. Responsibilities of an Advocate for The Arc of NEPA: Individual- Connect with Resources Special Education (attend IEP meetings, review reports and support) Future Planning Support (social security, wills, waivers, etc.) Systems- presentations, trainings and events for parents/caregivers, staff, agencies schools and community members. Legislative- policy matters, voting Self Advocacy- support, assistance, teaching and transferring skills.

Increasing public awareness and community education through training 20 Myths About Special Education - Facts about frequently misunderstood components in special education. (1 hr) Transition to Kindergarten - Review of the policies and procedures parents should know when their child transitions from Early Intervention to Kindergarten. (1 hr) Powerful Parents - 10 tips to help you become a more effective participant in special education. (1 hr) Transition in the IEP- Review of Transition beginning at age 14 in the IEP and how parents can prepare for the transition to adulthood. (1 hr) Intelligent Lives - Screening of Intelligent Lives , a documentary from Dan Habib that challenges the perception of intelligence, and points to a future in which people of all abilities can fully participate in higher education, meaningful employment, and intimate relationships. Screening is followed by a brief Q & A discussion. (2 hrs) Get Organized - Make and take workshop on how to keep your child s medical and educational records organized and accessible. (1 hr- 10 participant max) IEP vs 504- Learn key differences between a 504 and an IEP. (1 hr) The ABC s of Special Education - A brief overview of important topics that pertain to special education A-Z. (1 hr) ESY- Review of All Aspects of Extended School Year. (1 hr) IEP Walk Through -Discussion on the different sections of the IEP and important information to be include. (1 hr) What I Wish Professionals Knew About My Child with Disabilities- Presentation geared towards professionals (and future professionals) to increase understanding and promote positive relationships with individuals with I/DD. It has been created based on feedback from individual and family experiences. (1 hr) Identification to Implementation, An Overview of the Special Education Process - Review of the regulations and procedures involved in seeking school age special education services. (1 hr) Successful Inclusion Throughout Life- Tips for both families and providers for meaningful inclusion of individuals with I/DD from childhood through adulthood. (1 hr) Overview of Early Intervention - Information on IDEA part B & C, eligibility, evaluations and services for birth to age 3 and ages 3-5. (1 hr)

Why Does Inclusion Matter ? Benefits both person with disabilities and those without Positive impact in all areas of life Greater empathy and understanding Challenging stereotypes and attitudes Starting inclusive practices at a young age increases the chances that it will continue throughout the life span
Arc Advocacy Tips and Tools It is not enough to be present, participation is key. Choice is important Give choices to be feel in control and moving forward. Inclusion is not all or none Don t have to be able to do what everyone else is doing OR do it as well as everyone else. Behavior is communication Must be meaningful Why am I here? Build on strengths and give support where it is needed. Communicate frequently and concisely
Arc Advocacy Tips and Tools Cont. Stress positive not just negative. Learn when to be persistent and when to be patient Never go it alone Always put in writing Don t have to take no for an answer- Show me the policy! Research and learn all you can on Right to Education and Future Planning- or really any topic you feel is important. Attend one of our trainings! Build relationships as you go- Hold on to those contacts ! Don t be afraid to make your voice heard !
