Four Steps to Overcome Reactive Behavior Relabel Reattribute Refocus Revalue
The Four-Step Method: Relabeling Relabeling When we feel the urge of an intrusive thought or reactive behavior, refuse to accept it at face value or as truth. Instead, recognize the thoughts and feelings as inherently false and misleading. Immediately make a mental note to relabel the thought, accompanying feeling or desire to repeat the action. When we give in to them as facts, the thoughts and accompanying feelings or desires become stronger with each repetition. Repetition brands them into our neuromuscular systems. Both muscles and nerves have memory that is strengthened with each repetition.
The Four-Step Method: Reattribute Reattribute Name the thought or feeling you are experiencing. Assess the possible cause Having relabeled an intrusive thought or feeling, attribute that message to a faulty connection (or pattern) in the brain wiring refuse to let your brain push you around. Be transformed by the renewing of your mind. - Romans 12:2
The Four-Step Method: Refocus Refocus Choose to refocus your attention towards something else. It could be singing, calling a friend, reading a book, etc. This requires significant willpower or self-control. Self-control is a manifestation of the fruit of the Spirit listed in Galatians 5:22-23.
The Four-Step Method: Refocus Refocus cont. The ability to Refocus is part of the everything God has provided pertaining to life and godliness. Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, for His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence. 2 Peter 1:2-3 When we refocus it is like substituting a good circuit in place of a bad one. However, this requires courage and the intentional involvement of the will, fueled by belief, which will create a new pathway in the brain.
The Four-Step Method: Reevaluate Reevaluate Proverbs 4:23-27 Watch over your heart with all diligence, For from it flow the springs of life. Rid yourself of a deceitful mouth And keep devious speech far from you. Let your eyes look directly ahead And let your gaze be fixed straight in front of you. Watch the path of your feet, And all your ways will be established. Do not turn to the right or to the left; Turn your foot from evil.
The Four-Step Method: Reevaluate Reevaluate, cont. Give wise attention to your thoughts, feelings and behavior. Compare them to what is revealed in God s word. This means seeing matters as they really are or in accordance with the truth. You do not have to continue to follow the impulsive reaction of your brain. instead you have the right, ability and responsibility to choose actions that conform to what God has said. Change your internal dialog fromcompulsion to choice: Not I have to ; but, I am going to .
Summary: Overcoming Reactive Behavior Relabel - to give a new name, to put on a new label. It is done intellectually. Reattribute - to attribute the cause of something to something else other than what you originally thought it was. Refocus - Changing the focus of our attention from one thing to another. It is done intentionally/purposely by an act of our will. Reevaluate- comparing values in order to reassign a new value to something that has been valued incorrectly. Deeper than relabeling because it has an emotional (belief) component.
