  2. THE BRAIN @ WORK The brain is the most important organ. The brain allows us to do things on a daily basis without thinking about it. The brain is in charge of all your other organs. http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQIiHhZfzyYX0nzlmW8KwxQ6jvACdfNSjoa0M37tvrZHUeGRoA5ErFruKc 1 - 2 LESSON PREPARED BY MS MINNIE

  3. Brain part Major function Cerebrum or cortex This is the thinking part of the brain. It controls your voluntary muscles and helps you to reason. Your short and long term memory is located in the cerebrum. http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRB36pi7a3iujx467ZsCMgqfETpNQGBl5nHbhPs8Hq8WWJvZ8hdS3Hn-g 1 - 3 LESSON PREPARED BY MS MINNIE

  4. PARTS OF THE BRAIN The pituitary gland Controls the release of hormones and keeps your metabolism going. The hypothalamus Controls the body s temperature http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRQpalyWVOHVnPO2swxqjvfTSCX6ugjHpak4iM4jaLf5lU1Mpst7niVmg Brain stem This is the brain s control center that sorts through the millions of messages that the body sends back and forth. The brain stem is in charge of all the functions that your body needs to stay alive. Cerebellum It controls - balance, movement and co-ordination. 1 - 4 LESSON PREPARED BY MS MINNIE

  5. Frontal lobe It governs our ability to reason, make judgments, organise information and control some of the motor/muscle functions. It is associated with the higher level of thinking and expressive language. Parietal lobe It is involved with visual attention and is associated with processing tactile sensory information such as pressure, touch and pain. It controls vision and interpreting visual (what you see) stimuli and information. Occipital lobe It control hearing and is related to smell, taste and short-term memory (especially visual and verbal). The lobe is important for interpreting sounds and the language we hear. 1 - 5 Temporal lobe LESSON PREPARED BY MS MINNIE

  6. THE BRAIN IS DIVIDED INTO TWO HEMISPHERES. The left side is the more analytical side helping you with mathematics and logic. The right side helps you to think in an abstract way. ? ? ? ? + ??= ???? ? ?=0 1 - 6 LESSON PREPARED BY MS MINNIE

  7. NERVES The nerves are protected by the spinal cord. The spinal cord and nerves are know as the nervous system Messages are sent back and forth along the spinal cord. 1 - 7 LESSON PREPARED BY MS MINNIE

  8. MEMORY Everything you experience is stored in your memory. The more often you do something the easier it is to recall how to do it from your memory. Information enters into your memory through your five senses. http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQSPPLkWe-O2nF8v7kfHAbjUEXiPjsc2XwJPkw7dT857aYPXj4na79lFx0 1 - 8 LESSON PREPARED BY MS MINNIE

  9. SENSES AND MEMORY Seeing Feeling Hearing Tasting Smelling http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQvQtTHKKSlJh1Y-ArObJX86UAaBAjnkjlBrkEcak3lZjwlqkfaNr-Ju3Y Memories are stored in your mind like files in a filing cabinet. These are recalled and retrieved from your memory to be used as required. 1 - 9 LESSON PREPARED BY MS MINNIE

  10. LEARNING PROCESS Leaning is acquiring new information or exchanging existing knowledge, behaviour, skills, values or preferences. Learning is a process of building upon existing knowledge and is an ongoing process. The brain determines what information needs to be saved and what can be discarded. 1 - 10 LESSON PREPARED BY MS MINNIE

  11. GOOD WAYS TO ENSURE THAT YOU REMEMBER THE THINGS THAT YOU HAVE LEARNT. Using memory (mnemonic) strategies Decide to focus your attention and concentration while you learn. Learn in context Show interest in what you are learning Repeat information 1 - 11 LESSON PREPARED BY MS MINNIE

  12. FAILURE TO STORE INFORMATION The information does not stay. Encoding failures (unable to associate) - sometimes prevents information from entering our long term memory. Use memory aids (mnemonic techniques) such as rhymes or association to memories information. Examples of mnemonics: Acronyms Rhyming Phrases Visual or image mnemonics 1 - 12 LESSON PREPARED BY MS MINNIE

  13. Interference Retrieval failure When you cannot remember what you have learnt. Information gets mixed up When information is very similar it may cause interference. External factors such as an untidy work area, noise or being uncomfortable can hinder the learning process. Structure you learning and plan in advance. Emotions also play a role on your abilities to learn. Summaries help you to learn better. If information is not rehearsed it cannot be retrieved and will be lost. Learning is a skill that needs to be practiced. http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcT0VJWLGDXzh_0O0MprH-9nwry6rvD8KHzE4GavShy00Ji73TyDlKjYkhw 1 - 13 LESSON PREPARED BY MS MINNIE

  14. MIND MAPPING Mind Mapping is an important technique that improves the way you record information, and supports and enhances your creative problem solving skills. By using Mind Maps, you can quickly identify and understand the structure of a subject. 1 - 14 LESSON PREPARED BY MS MINNIE

  15. MIND MAPPING You can see the way that pieces of information fit together, as well as recording the raw facts contained in normal notes. Mind Maps encourage creative problem solving, as they hold information in a format that your mind finds easy to remember and quick to review. 1 - 15 LESSON PREPARED BY MS MINNIE
