  2. The Danish have hygge - the embracing of a cosy lifestyle. The Swedish have lagom - creating a life that s happily balanced. The Dutch have gezellig - meaning cosy but also describing a situation that is social, fun, and relaxed, or one in which you re catching up and connecting with old friends, loved ones, or anyone else whose presenceand attentionyou value.

  3. Gezellig (an adjective) and gezelligheid (a noun) are difficult to translate into English Situationscan be gezellig, as can peopleand places. It means cosy, quaint, or nice, but can also connote time spent with loved ones, seeing a friend after a long absence, orgeneral togetherness. The antonym to gezellig is ongezellig, which is used to describe places and situations that are uninviting, lacking in warmth or atmosphere, a person who is cold, distant, unsociable, unwilling to engage in a social situation.

  4. The term encompasses the heart of Dutch culture, as the Dutch tend to loveall things which are gezellig. Pronounced as [heh-sell-ick]. Gezellig knows no time - gezelligheid kent geen tijd. It's about the connection. The word gezellig derives from gezel which means 'companion' or 'friend .
