  1. What is documentary? A documentary is a non-fictional motion picture meant to "document reality, primarily for the purposes of instruction, education or maintaining a historical record." A documentary may also be described as a true narrative shown in a film or television program with educational value. The first documentaries, which were dubbed "actuality films" at first, had a minute or less. Documentaries have changed over time, growing in length and number of categories. Docufiction, observational, and instructional are a few examples. Because they are so educational, documentaries are frequently utilized in classrooms to teach a variety of subjects. It is the duty of documentarians to describe the world honestly, without purposefully distorting any subject matter.
