  1. Center for Faculty Excellence Community Engagement Scholarship in the Tenure and Promotion Process

  2. OU Mission The mission of the University of Oklahoma is to provide the best possible educational experience for our students through excellence in teaching, research and creative activity, and service to the state and society.

  3. Community Engagement in Higher Education The purpose of community engagement is the partnership of college and university knowledge and resources with those of the public and private sectors to enrich scholarship, research, and creative activity; enhance curriculum, teaching and learning; prepare educated, engaged citizens; strengthen democratic values and civic responsibility; address critical societal issues; and contribute to the public good. (Carnegie Foundation)

  4. What is community engaged scholarship (CES)? The scholarship of engagement (also known as outreach scholarship, public scholarship, scholarship for the common good, community-based scholarship, and community engaged scholarship) represents an integrated view of the faculty role in which teaching, research, and service overlap and are mutually reinforcing, is characterized by scholarly work tied to a faculty member s expertise, is of benefit to the external community, is visible and shared with community stakeholders, and reflects the mission of the institution. Lynton Award for the Scholarship of Engagement for Early Career Faculty, New England Resource Center for Higher Education, accessed August 12, 2015.

  5. OU annual review, T&P and community engagement Policies for faculty annual review and tenure and promotion are determined at the college and departmental levels. Reflecting the mission of many colleges and departments, community engaged scholarly work has been encouraged and rewarded. More recently, institutional-level policies for annual review have been adopted that specifically list community engagement as a category for evaluation under teaching. According to this policy, categories which should be considered for faculty annual review include: " classroom teaching: engagement with and commitment to students, willingness to keep teaching material up to date with state of the art knowledge, willingness to support broader departmental teaching mission, positive feedback from students via SETs and other channels and from peers via observation, engagement in faculty development activities related to pedagogy, new course development, service learning or service learning components, student advising and mentorship, formal and informal, supervision of graduate students."

  6. CE and FAS Community engagement is a part of your FAS. Make sure to speak with your department about how they assess community engaged teaching and research.

  7. Community Engaged Teaching Community engagement can be integrated into coursework in many ways. CE and service-learning are high impact pedagogy, an important part of the OU Lead On strategic plan. Resource: Case study on how faculty framed their CE work during the tenure process.

  8. Service-learning designation OU now designates service-learning courses. PACSL reviews faculty syllabus each semester. Designated courses allow department evaluation committees to clearly recognize and reward faculty members' engaged teaching. Deans and chairs are informed when the PACSL designates a course as service-learning in their area and they are encouraged to recognize the value this designation confers. Most departments currently encourage and reward high-impact learning practices, including service- learning

  9. Community Engaged Research Research that takes place in or involves a community, with the degree of community engagement in the research typically occurring along a continuum. Community engagement in research can range from academically driven projects involving a one-time, short-term relationship with an academic researcher who defined the research project to community driven research projects, such as community-based participatory research, which are co- defined by an academic researcher and community partner with equal sharing of power and decision-making to ensure benefit to both parties.
