The Invention of Anesthesia Courtney Wolin
01. What Is It? Anesthesia is a treatment using drugs that puts one in the state of controlled, temporary loss of sensation or awareness for medical purposes. It may include paralysis and unconsciousness.
02. Why Was It Needed? Prior to the invention, patients would endure agonizing, operative pain in surgerys
03. When Did It Come About? 1840 - 1846 In 1840, a dentist, William T.G Morton, began his dental studies with other physicians and chemists to find a mix of chemicals that could reduce operative pain. In 1846, the substance was created.
04. Where Did It Come About? Baltimore, Hartford, and Boston Morton began his studies in Baltimore, but by 1842 he set up practices at Hartford. In 1844 he took classes at Harvard Medical School. Finally in 1846, when his ideas came to fruition, Morton held his remarkable demonstration at Massachusetts General Hospital
05. Who Was Involved? studies on Anesthesia - A dentist named William T.G Morton started the - A dentist named Horace Wells who was his co- worker working on the invention - A chemistry professor, Charles Jackson, taught Morton about the effects of sulfur - John Warren was the surgeon to apply anesthesia - Glenn Abbott was the patient to go under anesthesia for the removal of his vascular tumor
06. How Did It Come About? HARTFORD Morton works with Wells and realizes there is not much patients can be offered for operative pain HARVARD MEDICAL Morton and Wells conduct experiments using nitrogen oxide and fail to stop pain 1840 1842 1844 1845 1846 BALTIMORE Morton began his dental studies HARVARD MEDICAL Morton learns more about elements through graduate, Chemistry classes MASS GENERAL Morton invents a concoction, letheon, and discovers it can be helpful for more than just teeth pulling
