  2. Why the IPDE Process is Used Helps avoid collisions Helps you become a defensive driver IPDE is an organized thinking and acting process that you will constantly use while driving.

  3. I- identify Locate potential hazards within the driving scene.

  4. You have to identify: Specific clues Other roadway users Roadway features and conditions Condition of your vehicle

  5. Orderly Visual Search Pattern A process of searching critical areas in regular sequences. You will continuously repeat this pattern as you move forward.

  6. Orderly visual search pattern 1. Glance ahead 2. Check rearview mirror. 3. Glance ahead again. 4. Search the sides of the roadway, intersections, and driveways. 5. Glance ahead again. 6. Check speedometer and gauges. 7. Glance ahead again.

  7. P- predict Definition: say or estimate that (a specified thing) will happen in the future or will be a consequence of something. Judge where the possible points of conflict may occur.

  8. You have to predict: The actions of other roadway users. The control of your vehicle Consequences of your actions

  9. D- decide Definition: come to a resolution in the mind as a result of consideration. Determine what action to take, when, and where to take it.

  10. You have to decide: How to handle predictions To slow down, turn, etc. Communicate with another driver

  11. E- execute Definition: carry out or put into effect (a plan, order, or course of action). Act by maneuvering the car to avoid conflicts.

  12. You have to execute: Change speed by pressing on the brake or accelerator. Change direction by steering wheel. Communicate with lights, hand signals, or horn.
