  2. Grinne OMalley lived near Clew Bay in Mayo. Her father was a merchant with a fleet of boats and taught her about the tides and the weather.

  3. There was a voyage going to Spain. Gr inne s father didn t want her to go to Spain and thought up an excuse for her to stay home. Your hair will get caught in the rigging. But Gr inne cut her hair off! She begged her father and finally he gave in and let her go.

  4. The people on the ship were merchants but also PIRATES! So Granuaile became a sailor on her father s ship. The sailors soon said she was as good as them. But Granuaile knew she was better.

  5. On the way back from Spain, the ship was attacked! Once during the fight, Granuaile spotted a pirate about to kill her father! But Gr inne jumped onto his back, and saved her father s life.

  6. Soon Grinne had married Dnal O Flaherty. They had three children - Maeve, Murrough and E ghan. But soon in a fight, D nal died. One day when the clan were out sailing, their ship was attacked! Gr inne was down below, having a baby.

  7. After giving birth to Tibbot, she rushed up to deck and drove the enemy back. A few years later, Richard Bingham then arrested Tibbot and Murrough.

  8. Granuaile was furious. She sailed to England to meet Queen Elizabeth I and make a deal. She was to stop attacking English ships and in return Queen Elizabeth I freed Tibbot and Murrough. Granuaile died at Rockfleet Castle aged 73.
