Dangerous Isms Effecting The Lords People Catholicism 2 Thess 2:3-12 1 Tim 4:1-5
Dangerous Isms Effecting The Lords People The Origin Of The Catholic Church The Catholic Church began as a result of many false doctrines and departures from the faith Changes in Organization 1st there were distinctions made between Bishops and Presbyters which became substantially obvious in the 2nd century The rise of synods and councils. Titles & offices were created to represent positions and authorities
Dangerous Isms Effecting The Lords People The Origin Of The Catholic Church This lead to a distinction between classes of believers Priesthood (special people) Laity (common people)
Dangerous Isms Effecting The Lords People The Origin Of The Catholic Church This digression lead to the belief that only the priesthood could know the truth and the laity was solely dependent upon them for Biblical understanding The development of the Papacy and its power began to be formally developed beginning with Boniface I around 418 A.D. This practice culminated with Boniface III being named the first official Pope (Universal Bishop) of the Catholic Church in 606 A.D. [Some say the Gregory the Great was actually the first universal bishop] The pope would later be declared to be infallible pertaining to doctrine This is reminiscent of the Jewish system of the Levitical priesthood. Other groups such as the Mormons and Jehovah s witnesses have also adopted this system

Dangerous Isms Effecting The Lords People The Dangers of Catholicism s Influence Change in Organization The Scriptures teach us of God s Pattern for the organization of the New Testament church Personally (1 Cor 11:3) Universally (Eph 1:22-23) Locally (Phil 1:1; Acts 20:28; 1 Pet 5:1-2)
Dangerous Isms Effecting The Lords People The Dangers of Catholicism s Influence Change in Organization Of course in Catholicism, the universal church governs all churches in a diocese or parish under the various offices and officers with this Church, i.e., the Pope, the Bishops, and priests, etc In many other areas, this also is the case. Christians can be and have been guilty of attempting to organize the universal church through various para-church organizations and human institutions under the guise of essential expedients ...
Dangerous Isms Effecting The Lords People The Dangers of Catholicism s Influence Change in Organization Evangelism: Missionary Societies, Church of Christ Crusades, Edification: Educational Institutional Lectures. Of course at and through these efforts, beliefs on Biblical doctrine are often accepted as law and the gospel truth because they are presented by renown and respected (but not infallible) brethren. I m seeing more and more areawide youth lectures and youth studies as well as local and regional preacher meetings and get togethers. Have we forgotten the dangers of the area wide youth rallies of the 80 s and 90 s. The centralization of doctrine has also been a dangerous practice! (Nothing inherently wrong but cautioned must always be exercised)
Dangerous Isms Effecting The Lords People The Dangers of Catholicism s Influence Change in Organization What about Acts 15 Who was the authority? (vss. 6-21). consider the matter (NASB look into ) not to establish Cf *(Matt 16:18-19) Remember the apostles and elders of Jerusalem came together All gave witness to the authority of the Holy Spirit. James was the one who gave witness to the Scriptures. That is what we have today.
Dangerous Isms Effecting The Lords People The Dangers of Catholicism s Influence Change in Organization I realize that what is done today is not an exact direct parallel, however, I am not so na ve that I don t see that there are many indirect parallels! Ive have been told on countless occasions that Bro. So and So doesn t believe the way you do and he is more this and that than you are We must be careful not to forget that local churches are comprised of individuals and the these individuals go back to those local churches with doctrines that have been taught and these universal gatherings...
Dangerous Isms Effecting The Lords People The Dangers of Catholicism s Influence Change in Organization Catholics leaders must be graduates of their seminaries or schools Their indoctrination begins normally in Catholic schools especially in very strong Catholic influenced areas Let s not forget the edicts that have been passed down over the years through Catholicism! How do we settled doctrine differences, at the local or universal level?
Dangerous Isms Effecting The Lords People The Dangers of Catholicism s Influence Change in Organization Many Christians share in the concept of the priesthood/Laity structure. They rely solely on the elders and/or evangelist to know God s word for them are seem to be very content with that concept. This is not what the scriptures teach (Heb 8:11; Eph 3:1-4; 2 Tim 2:15)...
Heb 8.11 And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, fr Eph 3.1-4 For this cause I Paul, the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles, If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of Go 2 Tim 2.15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
Dangerous Isms Effecting The Lords People The Dangers of Catholicism s Influence Catholicism Has Influenced The Nature of Worship Worship by it s very nature sacrificial (Rom 12:1-2;13:12-15)
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. (Romans 12.1 2 KJV) The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of (Romans 13.12 14 KJV)
Dangerous Isms Effecting The Lords People The Dangers of Catholicism s Influence Catholicism Has Influenced The Nature of Worship Under Catholicism worship is not sacrificial but sacramental & ritualistic Sacrament- a religious ceremony or act of the Christian Church that is regarded as an outward and visible sign of inward and spiritual divine grace, in particular: (in the Roman Catholic and many Orthodox Churches) the rites of baptism, confirmation, the Eucharist, penance, anointing of the sick, ordination, and matrimony. (among Protestants) baptism and the Eucharist.(Webster Dictionary)...

(Webster Dictionary) Ritual-a religious or solemn ceremony consisting of a series of actions performed according to a prescribed order: the prescribed order of performing a ceremony, esp. one characteristic of a particular religion or church. (Webster Dictionary)
Dangerous Isms Effecting The Lords People The Dangers of Catholicism s Influence Catholicism Has Influenced The Nature of Worship The Scriptures command that true worship to God be both in spirit and truth (Jn 4:23-24; Phil 3:3) But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. (John 4.23 24 KJV) For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh. (Philippians 3.3 KJV)
Dangerous Isms Effecting The Lords People The Dangers of Catholicism s Influence Catholicism Has Influenced The Nature of Worship There is a difference in sacramental and sacrificial (Heb 9:6-14; 10:1,19-25) Notice Saul s sacrifice at Mishmash (1 Sam 13:5-13) True worship is not ritualistic but right (Psa 34:18; 51:17)
The LORD isnigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. (Psalms 34.18 KJV) The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise. (Psalms 51.17 KJV)
Dangerous Isms Effecting The Lords People The Dangers of Catholicism s Influence Some of our worship has become sacramental Cf (Acts 20:7; 1 Cor 11:18-29) Giving that is not planned out and determined is sacramental (2 Cor 9:6-8 Cf 8:1-5) Matt 15:3-9
