  1. servant, deacon , deaconess (ISV) Romans 16:1-2

  2. A separate order of female deacons? The word women is used not wives (cf. I Cor. 14:34-35) . Redundant to say the deacon is to be a married man in verse 12, if in verse 11 he is speaking of wives (I Tim. 3:11-12). Is not in like manner speaking of a distinct office? (I Tim. 3:8, 11; I Tim. 2:8-9) Not a distinct office but similar characteristics of wives helping their husbands in their special work. Distinct office not addressed in church of Philippi though there were women laborers (Phil. 1:1, 4:2).

  3. Older Widows Deacons I Tim. 5 Enrolled to receive continual assistance by the church widows indeed (I Tim. 5:3, 9,16). Widows in need not Deacons indeed!

  4. Phoebe servant of the church Paul commends Phoebe, a servant of the church in Cenchreae to saints in Rome (Rom. 16:1). Receive her in the Lord worthily of saints not of the office of a deacon (Rom. 16:2) Worthily of assistance in whatsoever need she has need of you, not in doing the business of a deacon (Rom. 16:2) She has helped many, including Paul in fulfilling her role as a ______________. You can be a servant of the church without being in the office of deacons like being an elder does not mean you are in the office of the elders ( I Tim. 5:1, 17-19)

  5. Dorcas a helper of needy widows Disciple Tabitha: full of good deeds and almsdeeds which she did (Acts 9:36) Widows showing the coats and garments which she made when she was with them (Acts 9:39) Called not the order of female deacons to present her alive but to the saints and widows (Acts 9:41).

  6. The Bible speaks of two offices of service: bishops overseers and deacons servants Philippians 1:1
