Mole concept is crucial in chemistry for mass determination, counting, and volume calculations of tiny particles. Explore its history and evolution, explaining its essential role in chemical studies. Understand the connection between Avogadro's hypothesis and the relative mass of elements, leading to the development of atomic mass units. Witness the transformative progress from volume to mass measurements in defining moles. Dive into a detailed explanation of mass-to-mole calculations with practical examples.

  1. White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack Peggy McIntosh 1

  2. Male Privilege Men are unwilling to notice that they are over- privileged although they are willing to accept that women are disadvantaged. But the disadvantage of women directly translates to the advantage of men. Women are stuck with domestic chores, child rearing => Men are relieved from chores, child rearing Yet, men do not see themselves as oppressors They are tacit beneficiaries of systemic oppression The privilege is invisible, denied, and perpetuated 2

  3. White Privilege (1989-2010) Is there also white privilege invisible to whites? I can always choose to be with people of my own race I can choose to live in an area that I can afford I won t be harassed when I go shopping My neighbors will be neutral if not pleasant to me I can see people like me on television and movies . Two items not on this list: I will be treated respectfully by the cops I won t be killed because of my skin color

  4. White Privilege (2017) (Left) White supremacist rally in Charlottesville (Right) A black man in Baltimore protesting over the death of Freddie Grey in police custody 4

  5. Interlocking system of oppression Systemic Oppression not individual acts of meanness but invisible systems conferring unearned advantages and dominance Interlocking: Multidimensional White privilege Male privilege Hetero -sexual privilege Christian privilege Class privilege What is to be done: Use your privilege to expose and dismantle privilege. Be an ally. 5

  9. Color of Supremacy: Beyond the Discourse of White privilege Zeus Leonardo 9

  10. Color of Supremacy Privilege is unearned advantage conferred on individuals (who are viewed as passive recipients) Supremacy is about securing domination, constantly reestablished and reconstructed No clear beginning or end Not just by white supremacists but by ordinary people Whites recreate their own racial supremacy despite their best intentions 10

  11. A list of examples Anti-miscegenation laws to preserve racial purity Housing segregation Hypodescent or one drop rule Segregated education Anti-immigrant laws or exclusion acts Colonization and cultural imperialism Job discrimination Genocidal efforts against Native Americans . . . 11

  12. Domination is needed for privilege Redlining policies => pleasant neighbors for whites Job discrimination => people in charge are white Racial profiling => Whites are not afraid of cops Racial purity laws => Preservation of privilege Whites enjoy privileges because they created a system of domination under which they can thrive 12

  13. White History The official history portrays whites as creators of culture, science, and art When it comes to structural domination, there is no acknowledgement of agency It is hard for many whites to accept the truth of white domination White Australians are encouraged to sign a sorry book for crimes against aboriginals In the US, the attempt to provide forty acres and a mule to former slaves failed during Reconstruction 13

  14. Supremacy vs. Privilege Discourse on privilege gives whites an entry point for racial analysis However, it also allows them to evade confronting white supremacy and domination Discourse on supremacy gives whites and people of color a progressive starting point by not catering to the white racial thinking It acknowledges white privilege as a result of white domination, not as a mysterious accumulation of advantages 14
