  1. Deuteronomy The possibility of an Israelite king Judges The necessity of an Israelite king Ruth The delivery of an Israelite king

  2. A Bad King 4Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah 5and said to him, Behold, you are old and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now appoint for us a king to judge us like all the nations. 6But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed to the Lord. 7And the Lord said to Samuel, Obey the voice of the people in all that they say to you, for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me from being king over them. 1 Samuel 8:4-7 Israel s sin was not asking for a king; Israel s sin was asking for the wrong kind of king

  3. A Bad King 13And Samuel said to Saul, You have done foolishly. You have not kept the command of the LORD your God, with which he commanded you. For then the LORD would have established your kingdom over Israel forever. 14But now your kingdom shall not continue. The LORD has sought out a man after his own heart, and the LORD has commanded him to be prince over his people, because you have not kept what the LORD commanded you. 1 Samuel 13:13-14

  4. A Good King 13And Samuel said to Saul, You have done foolishly.

  5. A Good King

  6. A Good King 34But David said to Saul, Your servant used to keep sheep for his father. And when there came a lion, or a bear, and took a lamb from the flock, 35I went after him and struck him and delivered it out of his mouth. And if he arose against me, I caught him by his beard and struck him and killed him. 36Your servant has struck down both lions and bears, and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be like one of them, for he has defied the armies of the living God. 37And David said, The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine. 1 Samuel 17:34-37

  7. A Good King You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down and cut off your head that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, 47and that all this assembly may know that the Lord saves not with sword and spear. For the battle is the Lord s, and he will give you into our hand. 1 Samuel 17:45-47
