Dr. SNS RAJALAKSHMI COLLEGE OF ARTS & SCIENCE (Autonomous) Coimbatore -641049 Accredited by NAAC(Cycle III) with A+ Grade (Recognized by UGC, Approved by AICTE, New Delhi and Affiliated to Bharathiar University, Coimbatore) DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE COURSE NAME : 21UCS804-SOFTWARE PROJECT MANAGEMENT II YEAR /IV SEMESTER Unit 5- Staffing in software project Topic 7 : PERT Techniques 2/18/2024 PERT Techniques

  2. PERT Techniques PERT (Program Evaluation and Review Technique) is a project management tool that helps in scheduling, organizing, and coordinating tasks within a project. In software project management, PERT techniques can be particularly useful due to the dynamic and complex nature of software development projects. 2/18/2024 PERT Techniques

  3. PERT Techniques 1.Task Identification: PERT begins with identifying all the tasks necessary to complete the project. In software development, tasks could include requirements gathering, design, coding, testing, documentation, and deployment. 2.Task Sequencing: Once tasks are identified, they are sequenced based on their dependencies. For example, coding cannot begin until the design phase is complete. PERT helps in establishing the order of tasks to ensure smooth project flow. 3.Estimation of Time: Each task is assigned a duration estimate for completion. In software projects, estimation can be challenging due to uncertainties inherent in development. PERT allows for three time estimates: optimistic (the minimum time required), pessimistic (the maximum time required), and most likely (the best estimate). 2/18/2024 PERT Techniques

  4. PERT Techniques Critical Path Analysis: PERT helps in identifying the critical path, which is the sequence of tasks that determine the minimum duration of the project. In software projects, critical paths often involve tasks that directly impact project delivery, such as coding and testing. Resource Allocation: PERT aids in allocating resources efficiently by providing a clear overview of task dependencies and durations. This helps in preventing resource bottlenecks and optimizing resource utilization in software development teams. Risk Management: PERT facilitates risk management by identifying potential risks and their impact on project timelines. By considering optimistic and pessimistic time estimates, project managers can assess the probability of meeting deadlines and take proactive measures to mitigate risks. 2/18/2024 PERT Techniques

  5. PERT Techniques Progress Tracking: Throughout the project lifecycle, PERT allows project managers to track progress against the planned schedule. Any deviations from the estimated durations or critical path can be identified early, enabling timely corrective actions. Communication and Coordination: PERT provides a visual representation of the project schedule, which aids in communication and coordination among team members, stakeholders, and clients. It ensures everyone is aligned with project objectives and timelines. 2/18/2024 PERT Techniques
