  3. To Write or not to Write?

  4. Consider these 4 questions before you decide to write Is your school eligible to apply? Are the grant requirements worth the funding? Will this grant align with your school vision and support your current/future goals and objectives? Is there enough time to put together a competitive proposal?

  6. The 5 Cs of a Competitive Grant Application Be Complete Be Concrete Be Consistent Show Capacity Show Commitment

  7. Being Complete Follow the RFP guidelines exactly Complete all sections of the application Answer all parts of each question in the application Submit all additional requirements letters, completed forms, and budgets Review the scoring guide or rubric make sure to include all requirements for a maximum score

Do Sweat the Small Stuff Pay close attention to: Number of allowable pages, words, or characters Specified font, font size, margins, and spacing Required forms, letters, and attachments Organizational features titles, font choice and features, page breaks, charts, graphics, etc. Submission requirements due date, submission method, required copies, links, or CDs

  9. Being Concrete Use specific details to address RFP questions When space permits, provide supporting examples Know your audience use their vocabulary or word choice Avoid technical jargon that may be unfamiliar Use quantifiable objectives Avoid vague impact statements

  10. Being Consistent The details in all sections must be fully aligned with each other. Make sure to make connections between each section

  11. Consistency Matters! Needs Budget Goals/Objectives Evaluation Activities

Showing Capacity Let the reader know: What is in place to insure effective implementation How you will leverage resources to continue the project after the grant is completed What will continue to be implemented at the end of the project What lasting impact this project will have at your school or the District

Showing Commitment Let the reader know: Efforts you have already made towards the project goals and objectives Your existing foundation for success and support for the project How your project fits into a bigger vision How this project is part of an integrated plan for improving outcomes for students

The Anatomy of a Grant Narrative School Description Project Summary and Background Overview Needs Assessment Need the project will address How the project will address these identified needs Program Design Project goals, objectives, outcomes and milestones Aligned activities and timelines Management Plan Plan for program oversight and leadership Leadership team members/roles Evaluation Plan Metrics aligned to goals, objectives, outcomes data collection, analysis, and reporting procedures Long term impact of the project Plan for implementation and continuation Capacity and Sustainability Communication Dissemination Plan Structure for inter/intra agency communication Dissemination procedures for the wider good

Proposal Budget Funding expenditures listed by object and amounts All expenditures add up to the total dollars amounts Budget Form Specific details for each object Detailed amounts should add up properly to object sub- totals Details How expenses align to goals, objectives, activities And are reasonable and necessary And supplement but do not supplant general funds Benefit costs must be included Benefits are different based on full/part time, classified, certificated, and extra duty pay Budget Narrative Personnel Costs 9.23% of the total budget is the current rate Funds are taken from all grants for District oversight Indirect Costs Additional funds applicant will contribute to budget May be for dollars or in-kind (goods/services) Matching Funds 1000s cert. salaries, 2000s class. salaries, 3000s benefits 4000s supplies, books, equipment (under $5,000) 5000s services, rentals, contracts, travel, etc. Object Codes
