  1. Advocacy How do we advocate the wealth of information that we hold as Statisticians to the data users to influence policies, actions and change lives?

  2. Overall approach Overall, we need as statisticians to transform from being just technical statisticians and number crunchers to Policy Advocates and seller of our information! To do this we need to ask 3 key questions: What do our data users need from us? What do we as data producers need from our data users? How do we transform into advocates for increasing use of our information for policy making?

  3. Key questions that must guide approach to Advocacy What do the Data Users Need? What do we as data producers need from Data Users? Who are our customers the users of statistics, information? We need them to use our information/data for policy making and actions What are their information/statistics needs? Engage us more in national and regional policy making How are we going to package and present the information to them so it is useful and meaningful? More resources from governments and development partners for NSOs

  4. Who are our clients/users of information? National Government (cabinet, ministers, ceos, permanent secretaries of central agencies (finance, planning, public service), sector ministries, corporations/quasi government organisations) Legislators/parliamentarians Non State Actors general public, private sector, NGOs, academia/schools, media

  5. Who are our clients/users of information? External Users Regional organisations Development partners Technical agencies Multilaternal Organisations Financial institutions

  6. What are their needs and how do we engage with them? National Level Need National Statistics Development Strategies (NSDS) Need a communication strategy as part of the NSDS Need to identify specific products (relevant contents) Need to engage with users through NSDS process to understand tehir information needs, how they need it and when (consultations, surveys, social media) Need to engage with users at National Development Planning, Budgetings processes for developing and monitoring national development plans, MDGs progress, MSI progress, CEDAW, CRC etc processes etc

  7. What do we need from our Information Users? Recognition of statisticians as important partners in national development Use our data and information and know about availability of data for their information needs Use and increase demand for our information products Wider and more easy accessibility to our data Undertake awareness programmes with key stakeholders Developed relevant communications products Have the skills and resources including financing

  8. How do we communicate & Advocate? Through media (national, regional and global) Use existing forums at country level to advocate and disseminate Engage and present to parliamentarians through Parliamentarians programme through UNFPA/UNDP programmes NSDS Steering Committee to be co-chaired by NSO and Ministry of Planning/Finance NSOs to be intimately and significantly engaged in national policy discussions on MDGs and national development plan monitoring Prepare Booklets, pamphlets and new and feature articles that tell Meaningful Stories and transform data into information that will inspire actions and changes in behaviour. Attend Central Agency meetings and present key findings of Pop Census, HIES, DHS Convene a National Forum to discuss the key findings of the Pop Census, HIES, DHS within 2 to 3 months of the report being finalised and launched. Use the occasion of World Statistics Day to promote information from HIES, DHS. Use information champions/advocates such as certain parliamentarians to promote the use of information in policy making

  9. How do we communicate and Advocate? At the Regional level: Chair of the PSSC to be invited annually to attend with SPC the Forum regional meetings of Economic Ministers and Pacific Island Countries and Development Partners Meetings to raise strategic issues of Statisticians SPC and PIFS will collaborate in future HOPS to bring the Statisticians and Planners together at future HOPS meetings. Ensure 3 planners are be part of the PSSC governance. Chair of the PSSC to be represented on the CROP National Sustainable Development Working Group and National Sustainable Development Strategies Partnerships Group.
