Transition to Practical Teaching Methods: Challenges Ahead
Addressing difficult student behavior and learning issues in a class of 18 students transitioning to a new GCSE Mathematics scheme of work. The content covers various units including number, fractions, probability, and more. Additionally, it discusses the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences on toxic stress and the burnout cascade in teaching.

FROM PLACE TO BE Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) Adverse Childhood Experiences are an identified causes of Toxic Stress; they fall into three categories: 1. Physical and / or emotional abuse (physical punishment or discipline, sexual abuse; humiliating or dismissive of emotional needs) 2. Physical and / or emotional neglect (failure to consistently meet basic physical needs for food and shelter; failure to consistently meet need for comfort and love, or lack of developmental, relational stimulation) 3. Household dysfunction (domestic violence, substance abuse, parental mental health issues, bereavement, divorce and separation, family member in prison) These childhood adversities often co-exist, and the more ACEs a child has, the more likely they are to develop heart disease, lung cancer, depression, diabetes, substance abuse and other life-shortening conditions.
According to Jennings and Greenberg (2009)burnout cascade describing the debilitating cycle of dysfunction that can develop when a teacher is overwhelmed by students with emotional and behavioural challenges. The student responses deteriorate as a result of increasingly reactive and punitive responses from the teacher who also becomes increasingly exhausted with consequent impact on performance and mental health. TAKING OWNERSHIP Changing my mindset Teachers are skilled problem solvers, so often they will look for solutions to problems that are unsolvable. Emotional intelligence is understanding that a child, colleague or parent you are working with sometimes just needs to be heard, not to be fixed. Jennings and Greenberg (2009) Start over by assessing students (Numeracy test ) https://www.piximaths.co.uk/numeracy Changing the seating plan ( making my classroom less formal)
