My Experience @ Cisco Worked as a Software Engineering intern at Cisco s Bangalore office. Flexible working hours as well as offline working days, workload roughly 4-5 hours / day. Weekly sync up meetings with manager and mentor. Bi-monthly presentations with technical leaders and directors. Team outings, monthly hackathons and team-building activities. Leave policy @ Cisco.
Nature of work Independent project Production-level work Production: the final environment in a software development process, code presented to end-user. Starts with an introduction to the working environment of the team. Initial few weeks for upskilling and getting familiar with the concepts required for the project. Project allotment works on one s profile (CV) and prior experiences. My work was mostly centered around Microprocessors, Operating Systems and Linux development.
Necessary skills to acquire Skills specific to one s company, for instance networking fundamentals for Cisco, ML for Amazon ML, web development for front-end / back-end roles. DSA Research skills, being comfortable with browsing through company s documentation. Solution-oriented mindset to overcome difficulties throughout the internship.
Attend all meetings, stay in touch with manager / mentor and other clich points. ASK, ACT and document. Tips for securing PPOs Better to under-commit & finish on time vs over-commit & under-deliver. IT sector : combination of knowledge, curiosity and receptiveness. Explore the work of other teams / groups (apart from those under your manager). Be transparent & patient. Never stop networking!
Transition from College to Corporate Biggest challenge is to adjust to the working environment. Facing problems like impostor syndrome if PS-II ends up being your first proper exposure to the corporate world. Finding your own-way out of problems (not just technical). Learning to live in an unsupervised working environment, no micromanagement.
