Research & Innovation Role in Tenure and Promotion R & I serves in an advisory role to the Provost s office we are not part of the decision-making process per say We act as partners to promote a culture of support and success for research faculty We do this by providing coordination for research strategies and initiatives across colleges and with University leadership, linking the various support services available through our office.
Process Department college university administration Make your case: the file is "you" in the promotion process Make sure your understanding of the expectations are clear: Talk to your chair and departmental mentors regularly!

Describe how you have been able to adapt and where challenges arose Mention some details on expanded time, as appropriate for your individual case and specific discipline
Post-Tenure to Promotion (1 of 2) These are a given: Continued excellence in teaching, research, service External funding (as PI and as collaborator, detailing role in latter, specific to your discipline) Authorship and co-authorship Sustained scholarly output no last-minute surge Provide a textured description of your individual trajectory
Post-Tenure to Promotion (2 of 2) Your goal is to demonstrate disciplinary leadership Expanded collaborations Interdisciplinary research Service in society Mentoring junior faculty Build your research reputation National and international recognition
Career Strategies Benchmarking: Have a plan for documenting activities and progress Build upward from early career awards Mentoring of students and new faculty, as well as continuing to seek it for yourself Support groups Leadership of larger initiatives Scholarly presence beyond campus invited talks, conference engagement, federal agencies, disciplinary society engagement & service, etc. NOTE: don t underestimate your future need for referrals! Build those connections now!
Avoid the Associate Professor Trap Is more of the same that got you tenured enough? There are different expectations for Associate Professors. There are opportunities to change directions in your scholarship. Explore new opportunities and interests. Take some risks. Your role in the department (and university) is changing. More demands on your time, but also a chance to help contribute strategically to the institution.
