Summer After the First Year ZACHARY HELSPER, TSENGE COLLEGE
How many newly admitted freshmen took a summer course immediately after the first year? Guiding Questions What courses do first time freshmen typically take during summer?
IR provided data on all students who took a summer course from Summer 2015, Summer 2016, or Summer 2017. Overview of Data Tableau was used to organize and sort the data by First Time Freshmen who entered the Fall term prior to the Summer term enrollment. Course information was also included.
Only a small fraction of summer students are rising sophomores (less than 300 per year). The number of rising sophomores is decreasing each summer. Rising sophomores are interested in Math and/or GE level courses. Findings The most popular courses: Math (102, 104, 140) ASTR 152 CHEM 100 COMS 151 POLS 155
More analysis of summer is required to explain the reason for low rising sophomore enrollment. Recommendations: Academic departments can choose to offer more 100-200 Level courses to attract rising sophomores Advisors can assist freshmen in planning the entire first year, including Summer Session Develop marketing to help freshmen understand how Summer Session can help keep them on track Concluding thoughts
