  1. In the Beginning: Whose Name? Genesis 11:1-9

  2. First, a quick look at chapter 10 Another genealogy, but Not the same lived & died theme of chapter 5 Names, but not ages Locations Occasional descriptions

  3. As we come to chapter 11 Today s Questions: Are you trying to grasp whatever you want, or trusting God to provide what is good? Are you Living for God? OR Living for Yourself?

  4. In answering these questions, please consider that God desires to Guide our Direction (vs. 2, contrast with 12:1) It is Easy to Become Proud of our Accomplishments, & ignore God (vs. 3&4) God is fully aware of our Activities, & Motivations (vs. 5&6) God intervenes in order to move us toward His Plan (vs. 7-9)

  5. The focus of the author since the beginning chapters of the book of Genesis has been both on God s plan to bless mankind by providing him with that which is good and on man s failure to trust God and enjoy the good God has provided. The characteristic mark of man s failure up to this point in the book has been his attempt to grasp the good on his own rather than trust God to provide it for him . (The Expositor s Bible Commentary, Volume 2, pg. 105)

  6. For we do not want you to be unaware, brothers, of the affliction we experienced in Asia. For we were so utterly burdened beyond our strength that we despaired of life itself. Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death. But that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead. He delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will deliver us again. 2 Corinthians 1:8-10 (ESV)
