Activity 1b: Two-factor authentication Practitioner notes
Learning outcomes Children understand what two-factor authentication (2FA) is. Children understand why it s important. Children understand the different types of 2FA (fingerprint reader, SMS, email).
Lesson notes This second activity introduces pupils to the idea of two-factor authentication, and its use in adding an extra layer of security. It s commonly shortened to (2FA). It s also sometimes called two-step authentication . The tech industry will also use the term multi-factor authentication . Many kids will already be familiar with the concept of 2FA , even if they don t know it. Use the Netflix/Amazon example. Go through the lesson slides with pupils before letting them have a go at ordering the follow me cards.
Game instructions Cut out the cards. Start with the card that says BEGIN and then read the question in black text. Answer cards have green text at the top. Choose a card with green text that best answers the previous question, and place it next to first card. Read the black text underneath, and again, choose a card with green text that answers that question. Repeat until you ve reached the END card. The winner is whatever team finishes first.
