  1. UKRI open research RDAUK and OpenAIRE Building bridges across Open Science in the UK, 6 May 2020 Rachel Bruce, Head of Open Research, UKRI Strategy

  2. Foundations for Research and Innovation To achieve our vision, we need to get the foundations right We focus on four key strategic policy areas:

  3. To support increased research impact Meet global challenges with new forms of research Increase speed of discovery and innovation Supports research integrity

  4. UKRI activity Funding research , policies and terms and conditions Funding and providing infrastructure (including skills) Partnership, coordination and leadership e.g. UUK, UK Govt, devolved nations, Plan S, G7, Science Europe, EC , NAS, OECD, RDA, other funders and stakeholders

  5. UKRI Current open research activities Open access: UKRI is seeking views on its proposed open access policy and related considerations via a consultation, which opened on 13 February 2020 and closes at noon on 29 May 2020. https://www.ukri.org/funding/information-for-award-holders/open-access/open-access-review/ The UKRI Open Access Review will result in a single OA policy across UKRI, including the seven Research Councils, Research England and Innovate UK. It will cover in-scope research articles (including those published in conference proceedings), monographs, book chapters and edited collections that acknowledge funding from UKRI and its constituent councils. Policy & supporting mechanisms e.g. infrastructure, guidance and funding Open research data (including software): Assessing policy and support across all UKRI bodies with a view to align, update and ensure policy, practice and infrastructure for FAIR data across all disciplines close working between policy, e-infrastructure and skills/talent (e.g. Innovative Scholars, PGTC) to develop a strategy and identify key interventions. European Open Science Cloud (EOSC): closely engaged in Expert Groups, and ensuring the UK and UKRI continue to participate (FAIR/legal entity etc). Currently compute, data resources and aligned T&Cs for Covid19 e.g. https://www.covid19dataportal.org/ https://www.earlham.ac.uk/national- capability-e-infrastructure Research incentives and evaluation: For example DORA and Resume for Researchers , updating practice , working with Plan S on best practice and NAS and G7, and forum for responsible research metrics (FFRRM). Citizen Science: projects across a range of areas as part of public engagement in science e.g. Citizens' Data for Air Pollution (CitiDAir), Developing opportunities for in-depth citizen science using robotic telescopes

  6. UKRI Current open research activities: Covid19 UKRI signs statement on sharing of COVID-19 data and research findings UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) has joined funding agencies, publishers and organisations across the world in committing to the rapid and widespread sharing of research data and findings relevant to the COVID-19 pandemic to help the global effort against the virus. all peer-reviewed research publications relevant to the outbreak are made immediately open access, or freely available at least for the duration of the outbreak research findings relevant to the outbreak are shared immediately with the World Health Organization (WHO) upon journal submission, by the journal and with author knowledge research findings are made available via preprint servers before journal publication, or via platforms that make papers openly accessible before peer review, with clear statements regarding the availability of underlying data researchers share interim and final research data relating to the outbreak, together with protocols and standards used to collect the data, as rapidly and widely as possible - including with public health and research communities and the WHO authors are clear that data or preprints shared ahead of submission will not pre-empt its publication in these journals rapid and open sharing of software and code based on RDA Covid 19 groups advice It is a requirement of UKRI funded research into the virus to adhere to the statement and to share research data and research results as soon as possible. For further information visit the Wellcome website. UKRI is providing regular updates on the impact of COVID-19 on UKRI-supported research and innovation communities through our guidance page on the UKRI website.
